Have a shot at a what seems in great condition Canon 24-70 f/2.8L , $650 shipped.

Might replace my 17-40 with this, what do you think ?

Must be something wrong with it. The cheapest I have seen on Craigslist is 850 in NYC - but being Craigslist I can go and pick it up and try before buying. Unless you can do that too, I would avoid the risk. I should add that the 24-70 is a money-making machine gun of a lens - for city work, events, and press. Not terribly arty.

For me would depend on how much you don't mind losing out the width at the short end of things, and how important fast glass is to you. My 17-40 has taken one knock too many and also needs replacing, but if I do I'll either get the same again or goto the 18-55 2.8 IS lens, but this is because I've got a 15mm fisheye that I love.

Once you put the 1.6x multiplication factor in you're going to end up with a really medium range lens - which might be ideal for you for portrature etc...just depends on what you're up to with it imho...

Two very different lens. Both are excellent. If you don't shoot much landscape then I could see you swaping the 17-40 for the 24-70.

I wouldn't give up either though!

I'm assuming from his other thread he's considering it for a work lens doing Wedding Photography in Low light/No flash churches.
