Photoshop CS3 introduces "Smart Objects". I can take my RAW file and have Adobe Camera RAW convert it to a Photoshop Smart Object. In Photoshop, I open the SO and it is represented as a separate layer, where I can further tweak it.

My question is, "Are Smart Objects Legal in Challenges?" If so, which types of challenges (Basic, Advanced, etc.)

When I work with SO's in CS3, I do nothing explicit to violate any of the DPC rulesets. For example, within Basic, I can do a lot of tweaking to these layers in my CS3 project without selecting any portion of the image.

In Advanced, which is results-based, they are certainly legal, as long as the result is legal. You can use absolutely *any* tool in Advanced, as long as the final result falls within the rules.
Basic is another story. Currently, layers are not allowed in Basic (with the exception of adjustment layers). So any technique that makes use of image-data-containing layers is not legal in Basic.

Thanks, Fritz!

I forgot about layers in Basic when I was writing my question. So, cool...they are good in Advanced (as long as everything else is legal).
