I want to upgrade my laptop's memory.

I have a Dell Vostro 1000 with Windows XP. My current RAM is 1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 Dimm but the computer shows 896MB of RAM...why is that? Anyway...

What should I look for? Any particular brand? Can I buy only 1 GB or do I need to buy memory in pairs for best performance?

I looked up memory on Newegg and they came back with this:

click me

Seems awfully cheap...does this seem right?

Thanks for your help!!

I just realized that I have to buy 2-1GB modules of memory because my laptop has 2-512MB modules.

I guess I want to know about the Corsair Value Select memory from Newegg.com

When it comes to memory, I try to stick with Kingston.

Crucial memory is excellent (same as Micron), as is their service.

But in either case, you can use their memory configurator to see exactly what you need.

If you are buy the same two sticks at once you should make sure that you buy the pair. There is more to memory than a lot of people think.

What does your computer say you can upgrade too?
Make sure you get the same voltage sizes.
Is the memory new or used?
Where are you buying ti from?
What programs are you running that requires the memory upgrade?
Why are you wanting to upgrade?

Yep! Totally agree about Crucial. Upgraded my laptop within a day of purchase with Crucial, dead easy to make sure you get the right sticks of RAM, works a treat. Prices are really good as well.
