Hello Folks,
Granted I'm a geek and things that intrigue me are a bore to some others but what the heck. I thought it might be fun to look for vote/view/score patterns so I created a simple fun exercise.

My results, which may only be a fluke, were surprising.

Why don't you follow along then run these simply calculations and see how yours turn out. Share your conclusion.

louisp

HERE WE GO:

QUALIFIER:
For the exercise you must have participated in more than one challenge. actually the more the better.

DATA
The following data is needed for each entry:
(1) Votes (average of all)
(2) Views (all)
(3) Score (for all voters)

Data may be from both completed or in progress challenges.

CALCULATION:
Votes divided by Views equals Ratio

(NOTE:For the example I will use values from four of my challenges)

SEGMENT ONE:
Votes: 188
Views: 328
Avg Vote: 4.7349
Votes to Views Ratio: 0.5731

SEGMENT TWO:
Votes: 110
Views: 180
Avg Vote: 5.5455
Votes to Views Ratio: 0.6111

SEGMENT THREE:
Votes: 86
Views: 115
Avg Vote: 5.1395
Votes to Views Ratio: 0.7478

SEGMENT FOUR:
Votes: 115
Views: 197
Avg Vote: 5.5913
Votes to Views Ratio: 0.5837

COMPARISON OF SCORES TO RATIO:
SEGMENT ONE:
SCORE: 4.7349 (lowest score/lowest(overall) ratio)
RATIO: 0.5731

*SEGMENT TWO:
SCORE: 5.5455 (second avg score/second highest ratio)
RATIO: 0.6111

*SEGMENT THREE: (third avg score/highest ratio)
SCORE: 5.1395
RATIO: 0.7478

*SEGMENT FOUR: (highest average score/third highest ratio)
SCORE: 5.5913
RATIO: 0.5837

CONCLUSION:

In this limited exercise the conclusion is that in *three out of four challenges the lower the vote/view ratio the higher the score.

You're more than welcome to "datamine" my challenge results. Have fun (there's only 311 to look at). :-P

If the data were easily accessible I'd be glad to. Unfortunately, since it's not, the task of transferring the data in itself would be a challenge.

A couple comments:

1. You have stated the process of determining the ratio incorrectly; you are actually dividing the number of votes by the number of views.

2. As far as challenges already completed, these results will of course skew in favor of your conclusion, because in general the higher the score an image receives, the more views it will receive after voting is finished.

So, really, if this is a valid observation, it is only true while voting is underway. And even so, it's not really a cause-and-effect thing, which may be what you are implying (I'm not sure if you are or not), because really what's going on is that better images get repeat viewers even during voting.

I think boobies get extra views too, no matter what the technical quality. ;-)

I agree with "Bear's" last post. Even the views while the photo is in voting can be deceiving because the voter may have a quick look at all images of interest in the thumbs and open them, then open the good ones more than once while deciding how they compare in order to score them. At least that is how I vote, and not just one time thru all of the images in a challenge or one at a time, one time then vote, from first to last image.

I guess that what I am trying to say in a few words would be; I may view an image 3 or 4 times before I make a final decision about scoring it.

The stat calculation is interesting though, and I suppose that it would balance out for all entries except the very worst ones in a challenge in about the same way, because the worst rarely get a second look.

I guess that I just said a whole lot of nothing LOL. : )

If he's using the number of views off his profile page, it's a no-brainer. Higher scoring images will attract more views after voting, and so...
- Higher scoring images will have more views, thus lowering the votes/views ratio. Assuming he's dividing votes by views, which apparently he is, though the instructions say the inverse.
- Images that have been on a profile page longer will have more views, but of course don't gain votes, which muddles the situation somewhat, but still, better images (which should correlate with higher scores) will garner more views than poor ones.

Thank you for noticing I reversed view and vote in the formula. It has been corrected.

The data were taken from active challenge figures and from a past challenge. Data fields from the past challenge were: Avg (all users)(i.e.score):, Views during voting:and Votes:.

As provided, the subject excerise is just that only a simple fun to do excerise. In order to obtain a true trend hundreds or thousands of segments (challenge results) would need to be processed and even then its just information. At this time I do not know how the data would be useful.

Just for grins what does Yanko'ed mean?

I was about to ask the same thing...

Yanko (v): to post something intelligent, witty, or otherwise relevant to the conversation that is ignored, only to have someone else post the same thing soon afterward and receive accolades.

I'm assuing yanko has had it happen to him a number of times, so that's where it comes from.

To be "yanko-d" means you post something to a thread, only to be ignored. Then, when the exact same thing is posted later in the thread, by someone else, it is recognized as the greatest post EVER!

In other words, what karmat just did to me. :P

Of course, Bear_Music is guilty of premature e-yanko-cation, since he didn't wait for kirbic to actually get applauded for his post before complaining about it.

Actually, routerguy666 is the one who originally coined the term although it's probably more fitting if people would just continue to forget that. :P
