Who is on facebook? and who can get out of it?
I don't have a facebook account and never loged in but by what I read on the internet once you open an account (and give what ever information you give)it is there to stay (and be used).
I don't know if anybody here is bothered by the fact that facebook give no way of ever closing or deleting the account you opened (or almost no way as there is a document going around the net called "212 steps to remove your facebook account)

I opened a fake facebook account. I thought it was stupid and never returned. That's dumb if you can't delete it. I also heard that site tracks stuff. Not sure, but we are not allowed on it at work.

I'll stick with Myspace.

You definitely have to be careful as to what information you put in your profile on sites such as facebook since they are public.

As for canceling your account, I can assure you that you are able to delete your account if you wish to do so.

Besides deleting...here's a link to another "facebook" thread. They are about facebook photo albums; it makes "FACEBOOK" seem a little questionable after reading some of the others' posts.

As a college student, I'm socially required to be on Facebook.
It's actually very easy to get out of.
After you've logged in, just click Account, then Deactivate Account.
I have friends that have done it, although they usually rejoin.

Then again here is a list of some DPCers that DO use Facebook.

As I have said I don't have a facebook account - but by what I understand (there was just an item about it on the news here) there is a way of suspending your account (or closing it) but as I said there is no way of removing the information u gave (as a member - did U ever try to do a search for a friend whom U know closed his account?)

Yes I have done a search for friends who have left and their account is no longer there.

I'm sure they collect users information. This is not uncommon. Other popular sites, such as yahoo, do the same.

Anything you put on the world wide web is in public domain, so you just have to be careful what your write.

The site wouldn't even EXIST if it didn't mine data; selling that data is how they make most of their money, I bet.

That is true, your information is all over the place if you know how to look for it. Facebook is very good for socializing and I wouldn't suggest you to make your email or mobile public (as in any other online venue) but you can have a lot of fun. As in DPC or Flickr for that matter.

As long as you're careful not to give out any information you don't want to make public you should be fine. Also keep a close eye on the privacy settings , as they normally allow you to opt out of all the data sharing, provided you're smart enough to tick all the boxes. The same applies to restricting access to your profile; it's up to you to change away from the default.

The whole internet is a privacy free zone, and facebook is useful and fun as long as you keep that in mind. Also, it is miles better than myspace on the privacy side of things.

I have one less friend, now!

There are things I don't like about Facebook ... like the way you have to keep installing all of these different applications which all want access to your data. But man ... I just can't stand the sight of myspace. I'm sure it's because some kids abuse it and that it could look better. But geez... there are just so many awful looking sites out there.

I also feel like Facebook is more "social" ... more "interactive". I've had a myspace account for a long time and have just never gone anywhere with it. Mostly because I've had no reason to. Facebook almost "drags me along" kicking and screaming. So I end up using it without even trying.

I'm using it too some degree to maintain a "presence" amongst the friends of my customers. I post pictures of my customers on their facebook accounts and their friends see those pictures and hopefully that leads to more customers and sales for me down the road. :-)

Yes, but we already know that there is something wrong with you, Leroy.

Poking - spanking - buying drinks? I can do that in real life thanks.
; )

Don't get on in the first place to need to get out. It's a truly tragic site for all the previous reasons ΓΆ€“ and the fact that I've overheard some tanked-up city boys boasting on the train about which hapless bimbo they poked that day. An advertisement in itself why not to register if ever I heard one.

I have a Myspace page and a Facebook page and I get a lot of photography work by being on both. It's two different types of work, though. I get more jobs and exposure to bands and recording studios on Myspace and I pick up graduation portrait sessions, book weddings and sell lots of local/tourist-type prints by being on Facebook.

Networking is key to getting work, IMO, and the more people that see your photos, the more work you'll get.

i have started a photography page on facebook as well.

facebook page

mostly for portrait type clients... since clients often come as friends of friends of friends, or people I have worked with in the past, I thought this might be a good venue for advertising.
