I'm not sure whether this would be a better way to go or not, but I know that I find it hard and I'm sure a lot of others do as well to find time to go through and vote on 250 odd photos for each challenge topic. Not to mention the valuable bandwidth demands it putting on dpchallenge and the time it takes for users who don't have broadband...

My suggestion is that rather than having everyone vote on all images, a panel of experts determined by dpchallenge users will determine the top 10 - 50 pictures and then users vote on those images to determine the winner. It would make voting so much less of a chore and it will weed out the pictures that are not up to the challenge etc and if any should be disqualified.

In that case, over 50% of us may as well just quit while we're ahead since our pictures would NEVER be voted on. You'd be in short order creating a class of elites and have-nots. That's not what this site was intended to do.

I know it would save time, but I think it's a bad idea.

I agree with you that voting is quite time consuming now that the challenges have so many entries but the thing I like about dpchallenge is that I get the opinion of everyone, not just the majority selected "best." There are lots of photographers on this site who aren't considered to be among the best whose style and ideas I really like and whose vote I appreciate and value more than others and some who are considered the best whose work I don't really like at all. It would be nice to find a way to make voting easier but I hope that it never comes down to giving the power to a select few.

It's true that 300+ (or even 200+) entries takes a lot of time to evaluate. However, don't forget that you only have to vote on 20% of the entries for your votes to count. The entries are presented in a random order, so no one will be significantly affected if you only vote 20%.

It's great that anyone at DPC can get a chance to be evaluated by their peers. I'd like to keep it that way.

That's why I say top 50 - top 10 may be taking it too far, but anything after the top 50 are generally going to be a shot that is not worth voting on. The panel is not being picky about their selections - just simply thinning the number to vote on. I think its a shame that I may only get to vote on 100 pictures and miss out on voting on the one that I may have voted 10 on. Rather I'm loading pictures that I give a 1. Seems a bit unbalanced. The panel would be responsible for commenting on pictures that don't make the top 50 in how to improve to be selected. I don't think that this will deter people from submitting - it then becomes more of a challenge!

Not worth voting on? I don't think that's right p_Johns.
Vote on 20% if that's all you can do over the week.

In the interest of saving time and your own bandwidth, you'd rather vote on just 50 entries. As it stands now, you ony have to vote on 20% of the entries for your votes to count. For your votes to count, you're only required to vote on more than 50 if there are more than 250 entries in a challenge. Even on a challenge with 300 entries, you still only have to vote on 60 entries.

Just abstain from voting for some challenges challenge if you don't feel it is worth your time/bandwidth.

I have learnt just as much from photos that were not so good as the ones that are great, maybe even more from the not so good ones. Forcing myself on a few occassions to critique all shots of a challenge, in a great shot you never see all the 'flaws' of a shot; noticing these flaws has certainly made it much easier for my to decide what to submit and what not to, and what is good and what is not. I think the dpc community would lose a lot by your approach.

Some times a thumbnail looks good but the full size doesn't and sometime the thumbnail doesn't look good and the full size doesn't.

I rather the voting stay the same. I'm not a member so I can't enter all challenges. I usually will try to comment on as many of the pictures that I can't vote on because its a lot less then the "all" challenges.

We've got some ideas on the back burner to alleviate the mass amounts of voting done each week. Just be patient, it'll take some time to get done.

I think it would be a shame to have only the top 50, or whatever, available for voting.

You may simply find your photos never make the top 50 and thus you'd quickly lose interest in the site.

Wait, but you can get better and strive to be in the top 50 can't you? Yes, you can ..... but that is going to be a lot harder if you don't get feedback on your photos that don't quite work.

I agree that an editorial board selecting down to 50 would probably not change which photos get the ribbons .... I just think it would be a great shame for newcomers like myself to be cut out that way.

Look forward to seeing whatever ideas you guys have in the pipeline langdon.

I agree, but as mentioned you would be getting feedback from professional photographers and a rating that has been generated from the shortlisting that they have done. Also feedback from the pros as to how to improve so they may be accepted. Besides, if I were coming 180th out of 200 or around that point I would be losing interest in the site too!

Even if it were down to 100 it would be better than sifting through 100+ entries.
