When having tons of photos in Lightroom (over 6000) is it better to split them up into seperate catalog or keep them in one big one? I kinda like having one catalog so all of my collections are representive of all the photos I've taken. However, it is getting a little unwieldy and I'm running out of space on my laptop.

If you are actively using and relying on LR's cataloging features, then you probably want to just keep everything in one catalog.

Myself... I don't use and wish I could turn off the catalog.

Although version 1.3 sped things up considerably ... I still delete my catalogs pretty regularly. I generally have only a few weddings in my catalog before I delete it (which probably equates to about 2000-3000 pictures).

I store my files in subdirectories on the hard drive according to the subject of the photo shoot. So it's pretty easy for me to find the pictures even without a catalog. And I export the settings to .XMP sidecars, so re-loading restores any settings I've made on a given image. The only down side is the time it takes to rebuild the previews. But Lightroom automatically cleans up previews after awhile anyway, so I'm really not losing anything here.

If you are not using .xmp files, you can delete the images from disk while keeping them in the catalogue (I don't yet use sidecar files as I prefer a DB centric view... just wish I could get at it from outside, so I cannot say if you are in that path). You can see then in the library side... but not sure what develop would do in the case of a missing real file. I have a lot more the 6K images in there and it's as slow as sludge (although 1.3 did help a little).

Slow as sludge seems to be a common issue.
Is it something that a new system would fix?
I have 23,000+ in my catalog and while 1.3 did help considerably (thanks for the fyi as I didn't know about 1.3 just 1.2) it still takes entirely too long to delete from disk and for disk imports.
I'm still shooting my 6MP D70s and shudder to think what will happen when/if I upgrade to a 10+ MP body.

Any system tuning or tweaks?
I'm running a Athlon 2800 (2GHz) w/ 1GB of RAM.
I'm planning on adding another gig of ram hoping to see 20% or so perf. gain.

thx
