Like so many people here, I have an implicit set of rules that I vote by. Lately, I noted I've been handing out 5s by the dozen: 30 to 40% of my votes were 5s. That's not wrong by definition ofcourse, but I also noted that giving a 5 had become a way to avoid thinking about pictures that I liked nor disliked.

I think these pics deserve more credit. People put effort in these pics, why wouldn´t I? From now on, if I see a pic that I think deserves a 5, I start to think. Is it any good? Does it suck completely? Does the maker seem to try to convey something? Does he/she come close to succeeding? Then I vote. Either a 6 or a 4. For the long exposure challenge, I handed out much more 6s than 4s, and it took me longer to vote. But I do feel that the votes better reflect how I think than they did in the past.

After some time, I might start giving out 5s again. But for now, I'll just develop a habit of thinking about okayish pics first. :)

Statistically a 5 is "slightly below average," so it is really not completely a failure to commit to calling a photo either "good" or "bad" -- it's just about as much "worse than average" as a 6 is "better than average."

I'm curious Paul, what is the total, overall average of votes cast on DPC, from the beginning of time to now? Is this posted somewhere on the site?

I'm pretty sure it's not posted anywhere, but the last time I heard about it the overall average vote was remarkably close to 5.5 -- the statistical middle of our voting scale.

If you look at the Challenge History page you can see the overall average vote for each challenge and get an idea from that -- on the first page I looked at, most of the challenges finished with overall averages between 5.3 and 5.7 ...

I just calculated it based upon the challenge history page.

Since Day 1, the average is 5.326043
For 2007, the average is 5.51154
