I was wondering if anyone with this lens gets extremely soft pictures (practically unusable for portraits) at apertures f2.8 - f4.
I found one of these in surprisingly good condition on craigslist for only $40, so I couldn't pass it up. I figure I got what I payed for (didn't think it would even work when I saw the post), although it does work well at f5.6 and lower.

I don't have one, but for only $40 I don't think you really could go that wrong! |

I've read this comment about this lens before - lots of times, although it was generally that f4 was decent and beyond. |

Yea, I thought it was a scam at first for $40 since these go for about $450 at B&H. there is a small scratch on the front lens but it not in any place to affect the image.
I have also read a few reviews of this lens where f4 and lower is really soft (f4 works, but f5.6 is where the sharpness is really what I would have expected from this lens) but I've also seen reviews that say it is sharp even wide open.
I guess I can't complain either way, just curious.

The contrast and sharpnes suck wide open.
But from f4 it is a gem. Uber-contrast and kickass sharpness. The range sucks on a DX, can't wait to use it on FX.
