I am looking to build up a basic studio lighting set...on a limited budget.
Looking at AIM Studio kits & Photoflex First Studio Portrait Kit.
Any suggestions for kits or experience with kits would be awesome.
cheers,

I spent around $130 on a flash, light stand (10 feet high and folds to about 2.5ft), umbrella and adapter thing.
Add on another $30 for the wireless stuff and you have a very portable kit.
Or, since you shoot Nikon, look on Ebay for used SB-20s. I have one of these and they rule. Cheap, small and very efficient at lighting.

Thanks, which company did you go with?
I will check the sb-20.

As I always say, and stand by, Home Depot is the poor mans lighting source. Especially if you are a beginner with lights, and would need the time to experiment.
If, of course you are not a poor man, then, know this. All lighting equipment is made in China. Just look. Then the question you should be asking your self is, can you afford more whistles and bells for the money.

this is partly true - consider the portablilty aspect and the draw to home depot fades.

i do still use some halogen work lamps - and a flourescent one too, but only near a 110v plugin - and even when it's convenient, i sometimes don't want to break out the extension cord.
hot shoe flashes - and a 'quality' wireless way to fire them. scab tripods for stands if you don't want to use soft boxes or umbrellas.
