Just ordered a Canon 300mm F/4L. I only have a little experience with primes (mainly from using my 180mm macro as a regular 180mm lens), but I'm excited to see what she can do. Down the road I hope to get the 1.4x teleconverter and then do some real birding.

Just sharing the joy!

Just wondering if you also considered the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L for your long prime..

Very close in price.. Was it the extra stop and and IS vs the length, knowing you can add the converter later..
Oh btw congrats

Congrats on the new lens. I really looked at the 400mmL but decided the IS on the 100-400 was the deal breaker for me. Happy shooting Doc.

Congrats. I've used the Nikon 300mm f/4 and if the Canon offers the same performance it will be an awesome lens, though 300mm is a little short for birding especially on full frame.

The 300mm is sharper than the 400mm and is compatible with the 1.4x teleconverter. which the 400mm may not be (at least the AF doesn't work). According to photozone.de the 300mm is still sharper at 420mm than the 400mm. I crave sharpness.

Another thought was 400mm might provide too much of a gap in the ranges I can cover. I have the 180mm macro which can be used as a regular lens, but would have nothing then until 400mm.

Just my thinking. The 100-400 was tempting too, but it was just out of my price range and the 300 is a fair amount sharper.

IS is also pretty well a must on lenses like this.

You'll love that lens! Here are a few shots from the 300mm f/4L IS

The 400mm & the Canon 1.4x do work together, and do so quite well:

(those 560mm equiv. examples were all hand-held, but were in pretty good lighting. IS would certainly be a big plus, but hand-holding is not out of the question)

Congrats btw - I love working at 300mm + and that glass is superb!

Man, that was FAST! It is in my hands. I cannot say enough good things about www.onecall.com. I've used them a number of times for large electronic orders and they are always a pleasure to deal with. Their customer service is second to none. Ordered on the 19th, delivered on the 20th with 2-3 day Fed Ex. They matched B&H's price.
