Which one do you prefer?
- The Nikkor 12-24 f.4
- The Sigma 10-20 f.4-5.6
- The Tokina 12-24 f.4
- The Tamron 11-18 f.4-5.6
Everywhere else I've gotten such mixed answers, I don't really know which one to go with. I've decided an ultrawide should be my next purchase. Thanks! |

Well if money is no object, take a look at the new Nikkor 14-24 2.8, and you can even use it on FF to boot if you decide to go that route. A wee bit expensive.
Check out bythom.com, as Tom has a recent review of the Sigma and his findings against the Nikorr 12-24 /f4 (incidently Tom chose teh Sigma).

| I'm a student, so money is an issue <_<; But yes, the new Nikkor f.2.8 would be fantastic. I purposely did not include it in the list. |

I think the reason you get mixed reports about relative quality is that they are pretty similar. The Nikon is probably the best overall, but is also the most expensive- about twice as much as the others. I went with the Sigma to get an extra 2mm of angle. You would do fine with any of them.

I have the tokina 12-24mm, and it is absolutely phenomenal, not really every wished for anything wider, and if i did, i could just step back a few feet, definitely a good choice especially since the price is quite decent, i got mine for $400.

Me too, its practically my kit lens. I use two bodies, D50 and D200. It is always on one of them and if I had to pick only one lens to use it would be that one. The only reason I would want one of the other choices would be to have the constant F4 throughout the range but you would lose 2 mm of wide angle goodness. |

Probably because there is no clear winner and, naturally, few people have actually tried more than the one they purchased.
For instance, I bought the Tokina. The only real choice at the time (since the Sigma wasn't out yet) was it or the Nikkor 12-24. At half the cost and little difference in IQ, the choice was "obvious" for me.

| Ok, well I'll cross the Nikkor off my list. It seems the 3rd party ones are well enough loved to make spending extra on the Nikkor pointless. |
