Sorry if this has been done to death before (I can't find out how to search the forums effectively) ....
What do people, no pro, use for light sources when they have no money to spare? Anyone got some good ideas?
I use a couple of "up lamps" which give a nice even light with no shadows.
I am thinking of getting one of those angle poise (I think they are called) desk lamps for more direct lighting.
Also .....
Anyone have any idea for a cheap version of a strobe light? I used to have a locator strobe as a diver, nice and bright, but flashed once every 2 secs or so and could not be adjusted. |

Halogen floor lamp (six feet tall points straight up...) and one of those floor lamps with three lights in it (unfortunatly I can only put up to 60 watts/each in them but can point them in different directions....)

I use cheap clamp on lights. Take a look at my setup shot for my Sports challenge submission.
setup
It's the light clamped on the handlebar, I have 3 of them. Maybe $7-8 each with the 150W bulb.

Yes, that is the sort of set up I am going to look into Spazmo. Like the idea of the other lamps there traique and toocool.
As for sunlight .... you can afford sunlight, bloody show offs! Here the tax alone on sunlight is too much for anyone except you filthy rich buggers to afford! The last photo of mine that used sunlight is still costing me a fortune as not only is the government taxing me for the initial sunlight, I get slugged an additional tax everytime someone views the photo as they see that as "enhanced value" to the sunlight I used. Sheesh!!!!!! Sunlight indeed!

Uuuummmmm... the Crocodile Dundee movies didn't mention anything about a tax on sunlight, and we are, of course, all experts on Austrailian culture after watching those movies!
I have some of the same lights that Spazmo99 shows in his example photo. They work pretty well, but give my shots a color cast. Will your camera do a manual white balance setting? If not, you can color correct in an editing program. Good luck,
JD Anderson

Well, here in Michigan, the government tries to save money by not paying the sunlight bill from November through February. As a result, we only get sunshine during that time on a select few "Free Sun" days.

Even better! Without the harsh rays of the sun, you can pretty much go outside where ever (as long as it's dry) and you'll have wonderul, filtered, color-saturating light! Lucky you!
The sun is pretty much my light source too.

The sun is my only light source-- pretty obvious by the few failed attempts at setup shots in my challenge entries. As for the weather, it's pretty much the same here in Northern Utah... we get some REALLY nasty temperature inversions where each day is often colder and even more hazy and drab than the day before... at least in the valleys. And the few clear days we get are usually at least -15°F. Yay!!! And it's right around the corner again! :-)
Get up into the mountains and above more than about 7500 feet, though, and the sun is almost too harsh. I guess that would be the non-government-regulated sunlight, eh? :-)

Unfortunately, the filtered version of light we get here when sunlight is off is only slighty brighter than what we get at midnight.
