I'm celebrating my 1 year anniversary with my husband in Salt Lake City. We are driving there from Kentucky and, through a previous thread, have found some great advise for the trip there. Now that ya'll have gotten me there. I'd like to know, especially from the locals, what's fun to do there. What would you suggest an out-of-towner try out, especially on my anniversary? I prolly would enjoy some live music (no dance, rap, or pop) or a really good (affordable) restaurant. And how about during the day... any great places to go that only the locals know about.

You simply must check out Temple Square at Christmas.

Restaurants I love: Any of the brazilian restaurants (all you can eat meat - and it's great tasting meat!) such as Rodizio Grill or Samba Grill.

A nice choice if you want to combine it with the trip to temple square is the restaurant on the 10th floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building called The Garden Restaurant. The 10th floor has a nice view down on Temple Square where you can see the lights and remain warm at the same time. :-)

Brazilian restaurants are FANTASTIC, assuming at least one of you is a carnivore. The carnivores will be in heaven. They typically have a really extensive buffet of vegetables/salads/starches also, some of them very unusual, so a vegetarian will not be totally lost. But if you're a vegetarian couple, I think Indian restaurants are much more interesting.

Don't know if SLC has any good Indian restaurants, of course :-) besides, if you're vegetarian you already know this right? And would have told us in the OP.

So by all means go Brazilian, it's a treat.

Pick up an extra wife or two? ;-) Ok, maybe not the best idea for a 1st anniversary.

I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet. Go skiing. There are 4 major ski areas within 45 minutes of the airport. And it really is the best snow on earth. If nothing else, drive up the canyons, they're gorgeous. And I just went to a place called Porcupine Pub & Grill this weekend. It's just a short distance form the canyons and amazing food. If you want to shop, the Gateway is probably the best. But it's an open air mall, so dress warm or run between the shops.

the Rodizio Grill is looking promising... so does a drive up the canyons. The anniversary Inn looks pretty fun, but too rich for our blood. What I'm really really looking for is a private place to picnic or something during the day, and a cool bar/grill for the evening, preferably with live music and close to the cheap motel we'll be staying in called Homestead Studio Suites which is on Redwood Rd.

Another idea might be Pat's Barbeque. Here's where it is. Still a little bit of a trip from where you're staying. But it's cheap (very good for college students like myself), the pulled pork sandwich is unbelievable, and I believe they have live music on Fridays. Not totally sure if it's every Friday though.

I went there before. I think it's a good one for you

Well if you want to picnic you're here at the wrong time sister! J/K!

As mentioned before take a drive up one of the canyons, if you want some where to take a light hike I would suggest Big Cottonwood Canyon. There are some great places along the way up the canyon that you and your hubby could stop and take a nice hike and be alone to enjoy the beautiful snow.

Bar/Grill I would suggest Squatters or Red Rock downtown. They have great food and if you like to partake of the spirits, they ain't bad either.

As David mentioned before you have to go check out Temple Square this time of year, it's simply breath taking and we even have snow down there!

Hope you have fun and welcome to Utah!

Welcome to Utah.

Having been out to your end of the country, you'll want to take advantage of the incredible views you can get of the city. Since we don't have the tree cover that is in the east, and we are surrounded by mountains, it is very easy to get to views of the whole city at once.

Go looking for the view near twilight. I love the view from the Ensign Peak trailhead which is not too far from the state capital building.

For an interesting bit of history, take a tour of the Beehive House, the home of Brigham Young and many of his wives and children. It's only a block from Temple Square.

For a nice park with a view of the city, take I-80 east toward Park City. Take the 2300 East exit and take an immediate left at the 1st possible opportunity. There is a great park just up that street, but right now, it is very cold.

If you don't ski, you'll want to go snowshoeing. Rentals are available, and don't cost too much. Heck, you can even borrow our snowshoes. We live only a couple miles from where you're staying (which is a very decent place, if I can tell by looks). PM me if interested.

For just wander shopping, I love Trolley Square. It's on 700 East and 600 South. It's a converted bus garage from the early 1900's. Lots of atmosphere.

If you like western music, there's a place where locals hang out and do line dancing called "The Westerner" on about 3400 S. Redwood Road. It's a little less refined in area than much of Salt Lake, but still safe (with normal caution.)

The "Westerner" sounds pretty fun... does it have live music? The less refined, the better, with us. lol. Trolley Square sounds worth checking out too, thanks! We'll try out 'Squatters' and 'Red Rock' too I'm sure.

like i said, you need to go to leatherbys. Its just north of where you are staying. on 5400 s. and Redwood on the west side of the street. Its not a club or anything but if you guys just need a meal and some ice cream thats the place to go.

Note:

In Salt Lake City, they have a special, safer way of crossing the street:

I saw two. One by the Grand America hotel, and one up to the north, on an East-West street, near this shopping cart:

However, some crosswalks are just plain kool:

But really, always remember to press the button and look both ways, even if you do have a flag:

For some reason I was on a crosswalk-kick while in SLC.

Cool crosswalks!!! Screw the sightseeing on the way there!...I'm driving straight through! Better pack some diapers.
