I received Capture NX with my D300 recently. I edit with CS2 and have no plans to upgrade, so NX is the only program I have for RAW editing and conversion right now. However, it has been running painfully SLOOOOW. Just doing batch RAW->JPEG conversions takes almost a minute per file. And when I'm doing RAW editing, it will freeze up for about a minute after almost each input. Just opening the Picture Control menu even makes it freeze. Anyway one else having this problem? By the way, my system is a 1.5 year old custom build that hasn't even blinked under all but the newest generation of games.

Upgraded to the latest version?
Turn of noise correction, d-lighting if it is on by default for some reason.

Capture NX is a great program, much better than the older Capture versions, but it has alwyas been slow and sometimes painfully so. I do not do batch conversions with it for that reason. How much RAM do you have? Obviously more is better and can help but I think most of the problem is in the code. My answer to the problem is to only use it on speific files that I had already converted in RSP (not an option for you, sorry) and pre-edited.

Guess I'm not much help huh?

off the topic quick question: does Capture NX includes camera control?

I also have found that Capture NX is very slow. Have checked out other web sites and this is a common problem. Some options for RAW D300 convertions are Picasa or the free Nikon Veiw NX. I'm thinking of giving Veiw NX a second try. Not sure if I want to spend the money on a CS3 upgrade at this time. Only other option is shoot Jpegs.

No.

You need Camera Control Pro.

On my very old system NX is faster than Capture 4.

I just love the control points.

These responses are similar to what I've been hearing. I'm wondering if NX just isn't optimized well for the new D300 files. I wouldn't be surprised if it has something to do with active d-lighting or one of those features. I've got 1gb of ram, so it's not fantastic, but it should handle the batch process load fine. I'll play around with some settings and see if i can improve it at all.

Just as an update, I was working through some RAW's from the D50 that I hadn't gotten to yet (christmas is coming, better catch up for presents!). NX 1.3 blazed through the D50 RAW files no problem. So it is something about the new D300 RAW's. Hopefully Nikon will have a patch for this soon. I'm kind of disappointed they would release such a sloppy/buggy update.

Ok I am having a really hard time understanding how to open RAW files in Capture NX. Does some one have a work flow that I can follow. I can't find it in the manual, or in the book that I just bought from Amazon, hoping it would shed some light.

The store that sold me the software told me to go to the Nikon site, but that just seems to have a sales pitch not FAQ.

When I try to open a RAW file I basically get a message saying "Can not load file: *.NEF"

Anyone What am I doing wrong!!!!

That's really strange. Do you have the most current update of Capture NX (1.3 I believe), and the most current firmware for the D80? Not sure if they even put out a firmware revision for the D80 though. I honestly can't think of any other reason that it would not open the files. Maybe someone else will know better though.

You just hit File -> Open Image or drag the image to the window. You can also send via Nikon View if you want.
Make sure you are using the latest version of Capture NX (1.3).

Found part of the problem, I only had version 1.0, and even if I asked for updates it was telling me there were none. Thanks for all the help.

Capture NX is not a good program IMO. It will do what you need, but it's clunky.

I suggest downloading the latest version of Adobe DNG converter and just converting your RAWs to DNG, then you can open them up in CS2. And if one has CS3, just use it. That's what I'm doing until Apple gets off their ass and gives me an update for Aperture so I can do my RAW work in it again.

Clunky? Curious why? I love the program.
Personally, I find layers clunky. ;)

And the control points in NX are excellent! (okay... the control points are the only thing I liked about it before switching to Silkypix)

The interface is clunky to me. Perhaps it is fine compared to some other programs, but when one is coming from using Aperture or Photoshop Camera RAW, NX's interface is not as good. Also, I am only talking about RAW work. When your doing RAW corrections or tweaking in Adobe Camera RAW, there are no layers. All other serious editing I do in Photoshop. Capture NX (or any other program) cannot hold a candle to photoshop when it comes to control for serious editing.
