Best solution for quality vs cost, IMO, is the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro. because it's an EF-S lens (only works on the cropped sensors) it is substantially smaller and lighter than the 100mm Canon macro, let alone the much-touted (and very expensive) Canon 180mm macro. It is every bit as sharp as the 100mm and the 180mm, and a whole LOT easier to hand-hold in the field. It's what I use...

I also have the Canon 60mm 2.8 macro. Like Bear I wanted to be able to be able to handhold with a bit more ease and the 100 lens is way longer than the 60 which means more camera shake without a tripod. Amazingly sharp.

I've always recommended the Sigma 50mm f/2.8 DG EX Macro, as it's optically very sharp, goes to 1:1 (before crop factor), and is fullframe compatible too. It's also cheaper than the Canon equivalents, but that's because the AF is pretty bad... but for macros it's often better to use MF anyway :o)

I've been very happy with the Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8. Goes to 1:1, I find the longer focal length (rather than a 50mm lens) helps with increased distance from lens to subject, and works well as a general 90mm lens too.
When all my gear was stolen earlier this year, I didn't replace all my lenses with like for like. But this is one that I knew I'd get again, no matter what other lenses I got.
Edit: fixed designation, mixing my Tamrons and Sigmas up!

Crop factor has no relevance to reproduction ratio; it's 1:1 on all cameras, just a smaller segment of the whole on n EPS-C sensor.
