I'm far from thinking this should have ribboned, so I'm not thinking that. But I'm wondering why the low score on this, I thought (and i've been wrong on MANY occasions) that this would be at least a high 5 or low 6 image. Is it blown out?

Honest comments are greatly appreciated. Just wanting to learn more.
Thanks so much!

my guess why it didn't score well would be that it is a free study and it really doesn't have that wow factor. In my opinion you shouldn't jude the merrit of your work on how well it does in a challenge--- especially a free study.

OK, here goes.
The perspective is not becoming to the subject. Her hand looks deformed. I don't like the flash. What looks like a power receptacle to the right of her feet is distracting and I don't like the way the railing looks like it is bracing her with it's symmetrical 45 degrees on each side.

I think your biggest problem here is that because she is standing on something the shape of the implied figure is deformed to the point of being bizarre. I find it very offputting. Everything David said I am also in agreement with, except that I don't mind the flash fill per se, just that the balance of flash to ambient is a bit strange. I wanted to score this well just on the basis of "bizarre shot", a category I actually like, but int he end I just didn't much care for the overall gestalt of the image and gave it a 5.

but, you've done a heck of a lot better in the challenges than I.
Good Luck

I kinda like the shot. Agreed about the deformed hand. Must not have been a good month for weddings because mine got a 5.3 and I thought it should have been higher as I feel this is one of the best shots I have in my portfolio.

Just an observation from one who will never ribbon...
The pose seems off. Her left shoulder (and arm) seems stuck to her head and the hand is...wrong. You caught her at a bad moment. And this is a very tough crowd! - especially in Free Study when we have to compete with so many amazing images.

cryingdragon,
Crop it at the bottom just where the green stem of the flower that is casting the shadow on her arm is.

Ya know... if she had put her hands on her hips, turned around and winked at ya, I bet it would have scored higher! (if only because she would be connecting with the voter)

In a Free Study .. I think part of the problem is that the voters smell "commercialism" and vote it down. They'd rather be wowed by something new and different than by something as day-to-day as a wedding might be for a wedding photographer.

I felt no connection to the subject in this photo. I also tried putting myself in the brides place, and still did not much like it. Sorry.

I think lighting has more to do with it than anything else... it looks like you used on camera, direct lighting, which is rarely flattering to the subject. Now, I'm no lighting expert, but if you got your flash off the camera or tilted it to bounce off a reflector nearby, she would have been much more pleasingly lit.

I didn't vote but here are some opinions. I don't feel that the lighting bothers me too much... but the wooden thing has zero character and where the rail cuts the background is too close to the horizon - no breathing space. Also, it's kind of offputting that the land beyond is completely different on either side of her dress, given the otherwise centered composition. I wouldn't mind that if it looked more intentional. Maybe you shoulda had her climb up on that rail ;-)

Didn't ya get the memo? 300+ was the place to be this week, baby :-)

Quite like the figure and pose, even how the light models her back and dress. But the background elements do throw everything somewhat off. (Hard to let go of what we like about our own photos; my own entry also suffers from distracting background elements).

I seriously looked at this picture for quite some time trying to decide how I felt about it. To me, the fence on the other side of her was really distracting. It didn't add anything to the image at all, so it took away from it. Second, I didn't care for the angle. I would have liked to see her arms straight out or only slightly behind her for a better perspective and you has the photographer right under her. I think I would have gone right up to the bottom of her dress with the crop too.. The sunset in the background is gorgeous and I really liked the shot & wished it was just a tad different.

My eye keeps going to the railing. Because it's lighter than the rest of the background I involuntarily try to see the detail there. I think because of the lighting it becomes part of the main subject instead of background? Maybe burning it would help that.

On the whole, I think it's a shot the bride would love :)

I agree with the first part. That definitely would have solicited a higher score from the voter.

As for voters smelling "commercialism" and voting it down I completely disagree with that. Just because something is satisfactory for the customer doesn't mean it's actually good. The customer is already on the path to liking it from the get go since they have a connection with the subject. The voter has no such connection so they demand something more univeral. What makes grigrigirl work so good is not only does she capture the bare minimum (that is the wow factor for her customer) but she also captures the "flavor of the moment" (the wow factor for everyone else) and presents it in the most profesional of ways, which the voters love.

Yeah, I think you've hit it. That's a little like what I was thinking, but I think your description is more accurate.

thanks everyone so much for the great comments and opinions. i really appreciate it. i would have answered earlier, but i've been so busy with weddings and bridal shoots it's been wild. this young ladies wedding was saturday, beautiful wedding!

but again, thanks so much. this shot was by accident to get that much flash, but it kinda stuck out to me and she ordered tons of them, so i'm just glad she was happy with it. i'm happy w/ the submission, no matter what the score, I was just curious how it appealed or did not appeal to the masses.

again, thanks :D

have a great week!
