I'm looking for options for a portable flash battery similiar to the quantum batteries. Can anyone offer any?

That helped to some extent. I'm well aware of what Quantum has to offer but really am looking at alternatives to them and just using AA's.
And my flash (430ex) won't work with the CP E3/4. Anyone want to trade for their 580?

The 580EX II is only $349. Back when I bought my 550 and 580's I'm pretty sure I paid closer to $500 and that I paid nearly $300 for the 420EX. So $349 for the latest Canon flash seems like a heckuva bargain these days.

Why?
I have used sigma, metz and canon (550ex2). My understanding is the extra batt lasts longer and gives you faster recycle.
What are you shooting?
I am one to almost immediately go buy gear to fix a problem, if gear can fix it. (like an IS lens).
I've gotten thru entire weddings (8 hours, 1000-1200 total exposures) on one set of batts (AA nimh) in a flash. I usually swap them when I enter the reception just because. If I watch my ambient exposure, I can shoot eTTL at 3FPS (fresh batts!) and be fine.
I suppose 5 or 6 FPS might come in handy at times, but these extra batts are expensive! And you then have more weight to carry and are tied to the camera - i've caught more than one camera when the photog set it down and walked away with the batter still on his belt and plugged into the flash.
I have heard very good things about Al Jacobs Battery //www.aljacobs.com/

I agree. I paid $549 for my 550-2 back in July. When someone told me they were not $349 I thought he was lying!

HEHE I have a really novel one. I work for a company that uses 20 or 30 external flash units on a bracket and they use a truly unique set up. They have used RC Car rechargeable batteries. It takes a bit of electrical work but very very little and anyone can do it. RC car batteries are somewhat reasonable, but more importantly are rechargeable for quite a long time.
On the bracket they put velcro and back the battery with velcro and it sticks right there on the side of the bracket and since they painted the whole rig black it looks like part of the bracket. It works and you can shoot hours upon hours upon hours with no worry at all. |

Thanks guys. I discovered Al Jacobs in a round about way through Strobist.
I shoot events, weddings and sports so I don't often have the flash on camera if I can help it. Usually on stands or railing/rafters with PW-like triggers. AA's work for a while but definitely don't hold up and I can't walk over and change them to keep up my recycle times. Or, I'd rather not have to worry about how I'm going to time the trip. One less thing to worry about in my mind.
The type of flash isn't all that relevant, I just mention the 580 because the 430 doesn't work with the CPE3/4.
