I was misled by the title on this thread but it got me thinking on an idea I had a few months back...to rate the challenge topic itself.
A possible scenario how it could work: On the voting thumbnail page for the challenge, at the top where all the other text is, a small scale, say from 1 to 5, to rate the challenge itself and not the images submitted to it. This way if you really liked the challenge topic/idea you would rate it say 5 and if you disliked it, say to the point where you didn't even consider entering it, you would rate it a 1. This may help or assist the admins in choosing a challenge topic. At the end of the challenge an overall average rating could be posted on the results page, perhaps on the left sidebar with the rest of the text info.
This could be expanded to also have a scale to rate the entries as a whole for the challenge. If you liked them as a group you rate them 5 and if not or were disappointed in the quality as a whole or even if there were too many shoehorns/whatever, you rate it lower.
I started thinking about this a few months ago when I started to get real disappointed in the challenge topics (and unfortunately still am to a large degree). I honestly feel that if we could also give feedback on the challenge topic it would help improve the challenge topics or at least let the admins/sc know what/how the users feel/felt about a specific challenge topic or idea. Maybe it would cause more repeats if a topic is popular or well liked, but also it may help prevent the repeat of a less popular topic. Overall I think it could/would give the powers that be a stronger sense of how we - the voters - feel about a particular subject.
Rating the entries as a whole I think could be a way to help reduce all the negative threads/posts where people just complain about the entries as a whole.
These give the voters, especially those who do not post often or participate in the forums, a way to give this type of feedback without all the negativity in the forums that seems to crop up after a lot of challenges.
Just an idea...not perfect? suggest a change.
Do/Don't like it: 1 2 3 4 5 |

At first glance this seems like a good idea, but I wonder if it really is? It seems to me we are already voting on how much we like the topic by how many of us enter the challenge. And I worry that if we start scheduling challenges based on "popularity of topic" then we might end up homogenizing the site even more, to the point where if you don't think the same way as "everyone else" then there is nothing of interest for you in DPC.

I personally think that is a great idea. I hope someone seriously considers using it.

I tend to agree, Robert. I judge a challenge topic based on a) how many people enter it, b) the overall quality of entries (based on score) and c) the number of votes given/comments given |

Hmm...but, for those of us that do not like a topic or the entries entered into one, like me for instance, have no way of letting that be known unless I want to vote low for every image which does not help and in fact could be scrubbed so it would not have an impact. If I don't like the topic chances are I am not going to vote on it, but if there were a scale to vote the topic I could let my opinion be known without voting like a troll. As it is I used to vote 100% of every challenge whether I entered it or not. The past few months I have voted on very few and looked at even less entries.
I am not saying to select challenges based on popularity of any given idea, but it may help the admins select one topic over another on any given week or repeat a topic or not repeat a topic. I honestly don't think the number of entries or the number of votes is a solid indicator all the time. There have been many challenges where even though the entries were high in number and lots of votes given, after or even during the voting period there are numerous posts of disappointment in the topic or the entries.

I think Robert pretty much summed how I feel about it.

Well, you should know by now any time you suggest a change it's met with resistance. The only issue I see here is for the admins. Is it worth spending the time to set this up? That aside, any time you can get more feedback is good feedback. I think sometimes we're afraid of what this information will tell us. We can always choose (that is the admins) to ignore this data so why anybody has an issue with this is beyond me.
