I am in the UK and have had a deposit down for 4 months on a D3. The first batch came in and understandably they all went to the pros.

The shop can't tell me when the next batch are due.

I have now seen them popping up on Ebay. Some in the UK from Japan and some selling from China. One of the companies in China is offering.....

'Optional:

* £120 only for 3 Years Extended Worldwide Warranty card, so that UK/EU customers may service it at their local Nikon service centers in case of need.'

I contacted Nikon UK who told me that there is no such thing for camera bodies, only lenses and speedlights. Any camera body would need to be returned to its country of origin should it need any work doing.

I emailed the company in China with this information asking if they could clarify, but I just got a bit of a rude 'if you don't believe us then just don't buy' kind of answer.
It is possible that Nikon UK are just trying to protect UK sales and that there is such a thing as the 3 years extended worldwide warranty. After all. I can't imagine that pros working all over the world would be too happy if they had to send there camera all the way home if it needed a repair.

Can anyone shed any light on this matter please?

Many thanks in advance.

Regards
Bob

This is precisely why pros (generally) don't buy grey market equipment.

If the warranty offer were legitimate, I would have to believe the seller would be open and forthcoming with the warranty details. That they are unable or willing to do so speaks at the very least to the character of the seller and the service you can expect from them if you get a DOA camera. Most likely it also reveals they have something to hide.

Reading your post and the amount of rationalization you've included in it, it sounds to me like you really want this camera badly, so badly that you have nearly talked yourself into believing something that you know deep down isn't true. Please be patient, it'll be worth the wait to deal with a legitimate seller.

On another note, if you have a deposit in with a shop, they should handle the incoming cameras on a first come, first serve basis, unless you were informed up front that would not be the case. That may be an issue you wish to address with them.

Bob,

The scenario that you describe is exactly the same here in Canada. Nikon Canada offers a two year warranty on the D3, but this is not the case in the USA. So, I would believe your local representative and avoid the grey market. In the past, I tried it and it is simply not worth it. In my mind, you are at risk to buy from the grey market, especially from Asia.

Cheers,
Michael

D3 is one year
'The current list of D-SLR products covered under Nikon Canada Inc.'s 2-Year Warranty Program are: D40, D40x, D50, D70, D70s, D80, D200 and D300'

explistly excludes d3

Hi Ralph,

Yes, you seem to be 100% correct. When I saw your post I looked in the D3 box for the warranty card and sure enough it says, one year. I suppose the D300 is two years, I can not say for sure as the retailer sent in that card for me. So, I am sorry if I mislead anyone by my assumptions.

Michael

no prob. / i've been pretty much convinced that the D3 is my next camera but the one thing that annoys me is the shortened warranty ..
i have to hope that i don't have the issues i had with my D200 .. (in for 8+ weeks of service in 2yrs...)
