I'm buying a DSLR for the first time (been saving up for a while), but here is my dilemma.

I like all of these cameras, but I now have a few options.

1. Nikon D80 - are the extra features worth the extra money?
2. Nikon D40 - if I got this, I would be able to afford a better lens.
3. Canon XTi - great deals, but torn between D40 and Rebel here...

I'm taking any recommendations! I like all, but keep in mind that I'm learning. Right now, I'm leaning to the D40 because I could get a higher quality lens (which I feel is more important that the hardware - am I right to assume this?).

Thanks for any input!

Get D40 and better glass

ditto... the d40 is a good place to start, especially if you get some good glass to go with it... the d80 is good too, but it's a step up in price, and in learning... and you'd have to likely wait to buy better lenses... and the XTi... meh... it's ok but the Nikon is better

There a 'problem' though with the D40 in that a lot of Nikon lenses won't autofocus on it. This includes the really nice and cheap 50mm f1.8 lens which is a definate must have for any starting lens collection.

I mean you can get lenses that will autofocus on the D40 and the kit lens isn't bad but if you're wanting to build up a lens collection that should be a limit to be aware of.

You can buy those lenses anyway and just use them on manual focus and then when you upgrade your camera body the autofocus will work again. The D40 is an amazing camera for what it is and it's very cheap as well. I recommend it to a lot of my friends who want to get their first DSLR. It'll be heaps better than any point and shoot you've used before.

If you're serious about photography though it might be worth going for the D80 for the added lens flexibility.

I'm currently weighing up getting a D80 or a D200 (the D300 is too expensive for me) myself so I know the indecision. I loved my D50, the Nikons are usually quite easy to learn, unfortunately it got stolen so I'm without a camera atm.

Each camera has its strong and weak points, but they're all good. Go to the camera store and try them out. Pick the one that feels best.

Another option, if price is an issue, would be to buy a used D70 or D50. Most of the used ones available are nowhere near the end of their life. I don't know much about the older Canon models, but I'm sure most of them are good, too.

D80 is the best out of all those, but it really depends on how much you're willing to spend. They're all great beginners camera's, it also depends if you're proficient enough in digital photography to notice the differences.

Actually I have the D40x, I believe that the Actual D40 can use the regular lenses just like the D50 and most of the others.
