For those of you that followed this thread, my lens arrived yesterday already! I decided to try it out this morning before classes and was very happy with it's performance. I was suprised how fast it focuses and was very happy at the performance I recieved. Here are a few of the best ones from this morning!

It's snowing in Minnesota! We got about 10 inches over the weekend and it has been snowing now ever since about 9:00 this morning.

I really can't wait for spring to go try my luck with some great blue herons and loons with this new lens! Credits to ellamay!

Looking good Justin, how far were you away, what focal length did ya end up using?

Hi Justin,
Really nice images. I think you're going to enjoy that lens a lot.
Looks to me that you are losing detail in the shadows a bit so here's a recommendation for your next purchase: buy a powerful flash, if you haven't got one yet and get a Better Beamer to go along with it. I've seen many bird photographers use them. These are flash extenders that will brighten up the shadows, put a catch light in the eyes to make the bird look more alive, increase DOF (important with lenses of extreme telephoto) and will help to freeze movement of feathers so that they appear sharper. Cost about $40. Better Beamer
Best to you.

Yeah, I just checked the exif to see, it was at 453mm. I didn't zoom differently for the others so they should all be around the 450mm range. I was roughly 10-12 feet from the birds, which is a lot better than what I had to do with my 70-300mm which I actually had to put in macro mode some of the time to focus close enough.

I had the lens on a tripod with a 3 way pan/tilt head and it made it so simple. I simply loosened the horizantal movement knob and when a bird would fly in I could quickly swing the camera to where it was.

Thanks for the comments!

Here's a couple more from this morning. They are Pine Grossbeaks.

These are the original "crops". It was kind of windy, thus the ruffled feathers.
