As I go in to edit my entry - I am always confused about the following rule and would love some SITE COUNCIL clearity or wisdome before another sad disqualification.

In the following you read:
*apply filters, effects, dodge & burn, and other tools to all or part of your entry, but NO new shapes or features may be created in the process.
*saturate, desaturate or change the colors of your entry or any existing object within it.
*use layers, layer masks, and alternative layer modes.

In my opinion, I would think a layer would be a new feature. If not, I'm totally excited, but I want to make sure. If I'm using an old photo, or a texture as a layer that was not in the original shot is that considered new??

PLEASE help.

It might be wise to submit the original and finished version to SC. I submitted an entry prior to the challenge just recently...and that involved a textured layer. And even though it didn't add anything new to the image...I was still advised to not enter the textured version!

I figured this much - I thought about going goth and adding some dark features but I love using layers and textures. Since my last 2 entries have been disqualified, I'm actually leary of entering ANYTHING.

I believe that you can add layers (as long as they are in normal mode) but not textures as that does add pixels (though they are some what translucent...)

in advanced you can use layers of the image, in varying blend modes, as well as layer masking. however, toocool is right, you can't use any textures, as that does add new pixels. likewise, painting out large areas with a colour would also be adding pixels...

According to the discussions in this thread, texture layers ARE legal in Advanced Editing as per this quotation below.

kirbic10/30/2007 12:31:11 PM"Texture overlays are currently legal in Advanced, if they don't seem to add new features to the scene. So, if it's recognizable as a texture, you are OK, but if, for instance, you selectively apply a "texture" to add clouds to a sky, or roughness that appears to be an as-captured feature of a specific object, that would be considered adding a feature. If you're unsure, feel free to send us a ticket and we will give you thumbs up or down. Attach a resized original to the ticket, and refer us to the entry. Make sure to give us at least a day, better two days, to get a consensus."

As I suggested before...send your ticket to SC for verification.

....and for the record, the Advanced Editing Rules were Last Updated: Feb. 28th 2007. So the layout of the rules has not been changed since the above quote.
