I am kinda new here. Would you say that people here are voting honestly?
12/03/2007 11:28:32 AM · #2
I can only speak for myself and I do vote honestly. It's strange to see 2's or 3's on an image sometimes that either wins or places high. But, opinions are like you know what and everyones got one.

I would say that for the most part the winners are all spectacular shots, and the bottom are usually pretty bad shots, and most of the ones in the middle (like all of mine) are, well, in the middle. That is, I think the shots generally end up about where they ought to be; whether from "voting honestly" (which I think at least 99.9% do) or just from sheer numbers.

Site Council also has ways of catching cheaters.

There are, of course, shots that win that I don't like, and shots I love that end up buried but that's why it's voting, not "let Evan pick."

Long way of saying yes, I think it's pretty honest.

I vote honestly... I look at the image, does it meet the challenge? Is it well composed? Sharp? Creative?, etc.
12/03/2007 11:31:14 AM · #5
in a short word - yes

12/03/2007 11:32:51 AM · #6
I never have given a 3 or below......if I think that it's that bad....I just don't vote on it at all. I think that a 4 is the lowest I've given.
12/03/2007 11:34:57 AM · #7
I vote honestly, but I do give 3s from time to time. Otherwise I wouldn't be honest. :)

Not voting on an image, hurts the other images because there is no weighting for number of votes.

most people do

the sheer number of voters is a further guarantee that the few that don't have a marginal impact

and the SC (site council, moderators), are chasing them through a number of means, including software specially developed to spot abnormal votes.

the cleanest it can get on the web!

Thanks for the answers, that gives me reason to stay here. I did vote 3 a few times out of disappointment, but I will stop doing that now because it is just waste of time.

Also, I would only comment on the once I think worth 7 or more, but the ask us to particularily give comments to bad ones. I don't understand that logic

Wow, maybe I should vote 3s
12/03/2007 11:41:57 AM · #11
I think it is often a good idea to comment on those entries you think missed the mark (low scoring entries)- I think one huge benefit of the site is to tell people why things didn't come off very well so that they can improve the next time.

The photogs who are scoring 7 or more probably don't need the constructive criticism as much as the photogs you are voting 3 or less. It's just a way to try to help those looking for help.

But yet, every1 comments more on the winning shots than on not so good shots...

I agree with DrAchoo, I currently have 21 comments on my freestudy telling me how great it is, it gets tiresome after a while :P

I do vote honestly, sometimes brutally so.

I do wish more people would comment honestly. But don't just tell me, "Looks like a snapshot". Tell me why.

If you think my photo sucks tell me. I may think you're wrong, but I'm not going to call you out in public, or hunt you down and beat you with a baseball bat.

Well congrats on the good comments, I will never feel tired about those:-)

But, you might be right, just hope those "bad" ones are really looking for help

And what if they are not looking for constructive criticism? Too bad for them...at least you as the author of the comment can gain from the practice of critique and apply the learnings to your own work.

One man is honest, the other always lies. How do you determine which one is honest? The last question you would ask is "Are you honest?" That question will always be answered the same way by everybody.

This subject is as old as dirt.

If you are afraid of trolls, don't cross the bridge.

I think it's definitely more helpful to the photographer to comment on low quality shots. But that doesn't mean it's not nice to hear compliments, too.

For those that are here to learn, the comments on the lower scoring shots can be far more valuable than the ones on the high scoring shots

As for voting less than 3 being a waste. I disagree. We only have 10 degrees of low to high to use when voting (1-10). If you use only 4-10 then you limit yourself to only 7 categories into which to judge a shot. Don't be afraid to use all 10 categories. Having said that I must say that I use the low scores much less frequently than the mid range scores but they are validly used.

As has been asked many times... If you are going to throw out 1-3 why don't you also throw out 7-10?

I definitely don't presume to tell anyone how to vote but I just recomend that you don't limit your possibilities.

I wait until the 7th day, and vote all the images lower than what my average is. :)

JUST KIDDING, SC!
