i might get a more moderate wide angle. 17-40 or 28-105 over the 12-24 super wide. and on a 1.6x crop sensor you might be happier with the 85mm 1.8 over the 100mm macro
you could save some by getting a 580 and a 430. and maybe put the savings toward a more versitle trigger like pocket wizards or the like.
i'm not a portrait photog - so to speak, but i use a 550ex a 430ex and the st-e2 with the umbrella kit you're reffering to as well as a 17-40 f:4 L and a sigma 105mm f:2.8 ex dg macro.

What is wrong with the XT?
I would recommend this bag to save some loot:
Canon 200EG
They can be had for cheaper and are good bags with plenty of room.

Nothings wrong with my Rebel XT, actually it only has 8000+ on its shutter. I have been wanting to upgrade to a more durable body since the 20D. I was looking at the 30D (impressive) but I like the 'live view' feature on the 40D along with the newer sensor. I would say the sensor DM3 and DR are what makes me what the 40D over the 30D. But then again the 30D is $400 cheaper.

It's plenty. Ultimately you're going to find more to worry about than just gear when working with people.

The Elinchrom D Lite 2 is a Fantastic Lighting set up as it provides you with Two Soft Boxes.
As for your lense I would look at the ef 50mm f1.4 or 24 - 70 f2.8
Hope this Helps a Little |

All the eqiupment in the world can't buy a good eye or a good sense of business. If you want to make money - buy less and work more, if you want to get more referrals, you must understand that lighting and a good lens won't make a good smile.
Just my two cents (but today is a bad dsy so take nothing with seriousness). lol
