Dear Peter and Bruce and Deb,
I was out shooting, eating, and beautifying. OK here's the deal ... there will be a learning curve!! I may have one shot for the Christmas card ... and the snow has begun to melt.

Glad to hear it, Jeanne! As for the camera, take your time with the curve; get to know your new camera. Play. That's the most important thing. Play. But don't delete anything until you look at it on the big screen. You never know what kind of wonderful gems you might happen across!
Peter, please breath now, you're scaring me (I'm easily scared)!

My husband gave me an XTi for birthday & Xmas this year, and I was so excited. I rushed out to my favorite photo spot, and snapped 100 or so images. Got home, and they were awful. Big disappointment. Lots to learn. Lots of practice. I am finally getting to the point where I am getting shots as good as my point and shoot. BUT sometimes I get one that is stunningly good. I am confident that will happen more and more often, and eventually I will no longer be tempted to take the P&S with me. Have fun, practice, and when the chips are down and you have to get a good shot without a second chance, don't be ashamed to use the P&S. |

This is what I found with Canon, I was so disappointed with the 30D photos, it really bugged me that I had spent so much and was not getting the results I thought I would.
This is why I changed to Pentax. What I get from the camera is close to what I expected. I am now in the position of whether to change again and get the 40D? or do I get the Pentax 10D or the updated model?
Whatever happens in the future, I will keep the K100D, it is a good camera. |

what burns me is when people say to put the "subject" on a thirds intersection. If you are just "putting" a "subject" in your picture, then you are already throwing composition out the window. To truly be concerned about composition, you must look at everything within the frame, not just the supposed "subject."
Rule of Thirds applies to *composition*, not subject.
Scribes! Did you write that down???
Go tell it on the mountain!! |

Just got back from an all day cheerleading competition two hours away with my daughter's team. 185 shots......going to deal with them tomorrow when I'm not tired. Just one quick process and upload.

Great discussion of composition, everyone. :)
And yes, Don, I agree - it's about the whole frame, not just the subject.
Anyone else in Fairy Tales besides Kelli and me? I love my shot, so now we'll see what happens with the voters.

OK, please remember these are the first shots with the new camera. And I don't think they are anything to write home about, but ... you asked!

Okay.....I just got into it and stayed there with the processing.
I posted this in Slice of Life, but you guys know me so much more, so I thought I'd put it here, too..
To be a part of something like this in my lifetime and have something like this gift of an eye with a camera makes all the trivial stuff just pale in comparison to what I get from this.
I'm a cheer Dad....full bore, I *love* these kids! They're so ALIVE!!!! They're such a joy to be around, they're HAPPY!!! They work their tails off, they're talented, they're a real family, and I have the honor and privilege to be a part of this family by providing them with moments captured forever. Though I'd like to think that I'm refining it and developing it to its fullest, I have no control over what is purely a gift.....I can capture these moments in these kids lives that bring a lump to *my* throat, so imagine what the parents get like when they see their kids in an 8X10 print.
[thumb]619212[/thumb]
This is what it's ALL about for me.
ETA: These two are not a couple......all of these kids are just so comfortable and naturally at ease with each other that they'll just throw their arms around each other and smile for me if I just walk up to them and say "Smile!".
It's *SO* aewsome!!!!

Jeanie, I'm impressed. Good shots. On the first it's too bad the focus isn't on the berries, but I think the others are excellent. Great beginning!
P.S. It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.

I'm in. I think I mentioned earlier that I expect it to get killed for a number of reasons. But I really like the effect and the photo. |

Not I.
I shot for it yesterday, but a trip to the hospital with my daughter last night took precedence over even looking at the photos I'd taken.

Strep throat and an ear infection. NOT ER worthy, but at 6pm on a Sunday evening, all urgent-care clinics were already closed.

I have been pondering this since I first read it yesterday and the profound effect it has had on my understanding of the Rule of Thirds is off the charts.
Too often, the phrase, and rule, have been bandied about so that it has seemed to me more like a geography lesson than an aesthetic principle.
NOW....I get it.
I was cropping this 'til it felt right, and this was where I stopped and I couldn't figure out why. It looks like applying the rule here, though unintentional, enlivened this shot of the three girls.

Thanks, Don

kashi glad your daughter is going to be OK. Those weekend child health issues are the pits. You want to make them feel better immediately and its so very hard.
Family vs. photos, no problem. We always know what is top in the priority chain. |

Kashi, hugs for your daughter. Ear aches are the worst -- just no relief.
My entry for Fairy Tale has a lock on the brown ribbon. I will wear it with pride.
