Hugs woman because I have no doubt that it does not deserve that score!

HI all

Wow, what an *exciting* week this has been for lots of us Ts'ers...but glad to see that Ernie and Jeb have both decided that though their situations are difficult for them, things could be much worse, esp in North America at this time of year.

My hypothyroidism is aggravating but in actuality is quite mild, and considering other people's health problems, nothing at all.

This time last year I had a wonderful man in my life who was absolutely nuts over me and gave me wonderful gifts and took me to a local fine dining restaurant. This year I celebrated my 41st birthday alone, yes - but at least I had a bottle of Brut and my own made-from-scratch birthday cake and gourmet meal, and my cat, and the comfort of my own house, in which to have it.

Ernie, glad you gave that money, sets you up for karmaic payback in the longer run - give yourself time to stew and vent and do what else you must do, but then go forward and DO NOT GO BACK. That's almost always a tremendous mistake. I once gave notice then got fired the next day, but was still able to collect EI.

Jeb, so sorry to hear about the car/job - but again at least your attitude is positive. And yes you do have your cameras, both of you, and take marvelous pictires.

I guess where I'm tryign to get to is, everyone, keep it positive. There is nothing to be gained from dwelling on the negative (unless you're still shooting with film, :-)). One quote I read recently and decided to make a personal motto: Live life like you love it.

Best wishes to all,

Susan

Thanks Deb, I try - I have to! :-)

How's the current warm place with things going boom?

Heh - it's much cooler now and I've spent a few weeks here in Kuwait where it's quiet and things don't go boom. Heading back to the boom place tomorrow. Hoping internet is a wee bit better there - in the pods it's kinda missing in action these days (which means I get my exercise walking to the library to use the public access computers.)

I did put up some more pictures in the Kuwait thread - got to go to the Friday market yesterday. Interesting experience!

Jeb, the "Helpful" thing isn't really a valid indicator. There are some, like me, who mark everything received as "Helpful" (I keep track that way, and do feel all input is helpful) but there are others who NEVER mark anything as helpful - no way to know if they read them or not.

I do pretty much the same thing. The only ones I don't mark as helpful are the ones that just ask a question, such as "Where was this taken?" For those, I just PM an answer.

Susan, there's a very poignant Self Portrait in this setting. Get clicking! You can call it "Happy Birthday to Me".

Oh, and Happy Birthday from me to you.

Thanks Juli for the thought, and the idea - though maybe I should make it more of a 'Happy Birthday To Me - The Aftermath' shot instead! :-)

Oh yeah I'm in for FairyTales...

sorry to hear that your thyroid is still bothering you.

A belated happy birthday to you. I am glad that you are a smart lady that understands and takes the time to enjoy the good things that you have. Kinda strange but I take a lot of comfort in having my cat around. She somehow knows when I am hurting and gives me some attention and purrs in my ear. Helps with the lonliness. Oh, and you may not have that man anymore, but it is without a doubt his loss. Happy B-day.

Finally had some time to play with my new camera this morning.
Not the best in terms of lighting and focus...but I finally captured a hummingbird in flight. Looking forward to the "How did they do that?" that's apparently coming from the recent ribbon winner so I can do a better job of it.

Was going to enter this in a challenge but didn't want to get slammed on the technicals.

Sorry I have not been able to participate more lately.

keep your head up Kelli! Stay proud, it is not a reflection of you or your skills. DPC voters do not take the time to see the big picture, it's real meaning. Most of the time they are looking for something pretty, and if it is not pretty in their eyes in the first 10 seconds they vote very low.

Scores are not always a good indicator of how good/bad a photo is, only how they are percieved at a glance. Some of the most important photos in history would be close to, or even getting a brown on here.

Good job ephln, they are tough little critters to take shots of. (and now I know where my little hummers go when we are getting 5 inches of snow like we did last night..they go to ephlns!)

Happy belated birthday Susan! Hope you get the thyroid straight soon. I had hyperthyroidism (Graves disease) and had to have mine radiated. Now, I'm hypo as well but it's controlled pretty well with medication.

I promise to get some comments to each of you soon! I really need to get my made back up to more than my received. Things have been crazy.

I start cardiac rehab on 12/18 for 12 weeks. Fun stuff! My prognosis was pretty good though. The doc said the tests done contradicted each other. One shows the other 3 sections are compensating well for the damaged section, the other shows not so much. And though I have no real clue what this means, he says I have 40/45% EF and should be able to live a relatively normal life with that. So, that's good news!

LOL, this score doesn't bother me at all (though I thought it might be a low 4 range not 3). It's not DPC friendly at all. I just really like it for some reason and that's all that counts.

Thanks :)

This family of hummingbirds has been nesting near my home all summer so hopefully they will cooperate for more photo shoots after I figure this darn camera out!!!

I have an excellent idea and location for fairy tale. I'm off to shoot now. I wish this was expert editing! Hopefully I can pull it off. Terry, I'll be looking for you on yahoo tonight! LOL!

I join TEAM SUCK and my scores immediately start to tumble further! My Free Study score is sitting at 4.5, which makes it my second worst score ever. But as with kelli, I don't really care (ok - that's a fib - I do care a little bit....) as I like it, and I achieved what I set out to achieve with the photo.

Perhaps DPC voters in freestudy are giving me a birthday gift (hopefully it'll stay up there thru the big day, tomorrow) ... currently sitting at about 6.1. My mouth dropped open and I had to rub the eyes. I think my mentor's helped with this improvement. Crossing fingers that I may have a new PB on the way.
I'm hoping I don't Jeb. Speaking of which, I got a very nice comment from him on said shot and he helped that score with a very nice number too.
No jebbing no jebbing no jebbing, please.

Happy birthday, Susan!

Go get that personal best, Jeanne!

And to everyone, happy holidays. I've just put together our holiday card. We always pick a family shot from one of our trips. This year we hiked up a mountain in Vermont, and I took this thinking specifically of our holiday card. We order through shutterfly.com, and they have various templates they apply, so the picture has no text or adornment.

See I knew that something that I liked would tank. The comment is that the subject is too centered for their taste. Now I ask you how is that helpfull to me? Is it telling me that I need to take all my pictures off center and they will score higher? Oh well I like it and that is all that matters in my little world.

You might want to experiment with the rule of thirds. Not for a higher score, necessarily, but to see what works well centered and what has more impact when off center. You might be surprised, and find that you like some subjects on a rule of thirds power point better than in the center. As they always say, rules are to be broken, but I think it helps to know how to use the rule to your advantage.

I'll second that. I often make that suggestion to people myself. The rule of thirds is a good guideline, but the more important thing is not to put your subject dead center. Get it enough off-center so it's clearly deliberate, and often times a photo feels more balanced.
