I first ordered an Opteka battery/portrait grip for my Nikon D80 nearly two months ago. On the first unit I received, the master command dial on the grip didn't work properly. You could spin in either direction, and the camera would detect *maybe* one "click" out of 5 or 6. Sub-command dial, shutter release and AE/AF lock all worked fine.
So, assuming I had a bad unit, I sent it back (long painful process) and got a second unit in the mail just yesterday. Popped it on my D80... Much the same result. Sub-command dial happy, master command dial... not so much. After some more experimenting, I found I *can* get it to work if I press unreasonably hard directly into the grip while rotating the dial. I can't imagine my thumb could take much of that for more than 10 minutes or so, though, so that's hardly a solution.
I saw a recent review on amazon of the grip, and the reviwer made the comment "..the dials don't work half the time." I've done some googling and can't seem to find any other definitive info on this issue one way or the other. The place I bought it from is no help at all.
So, has anyone else seen this mysterious command-dial-no-workee madness on the Opteka grips? I'm about to just give up and send this one back for good and try to find one somewhere else...
Thanks - Chuck
