On the off chance I dropped into a branch of Wolf Camera here in Chicago (just visiting) and managed to get a D300. According to their warehouse they only had 7 left (this was yesterday). should be with me on Thursday. Very excited as I hadn't anticipated being able to get one until next year. As I hadn't pre-ordered, I am quite excited about this.. |

Here are two examples from my new Nikon D300 and MB-D10 grip. When I find the time, I will shoot some similar shots with the Nikon D3 for comparison purposes.

Now if your talking the D3 that is another story. I'd love to have a D3 and my D200. The D200 would house my long lenses for wildlife / nature photography and the D3 for landscapes and the rest. Oh what a life that would be ...... |
I will have disagree with you on that point. I am selling my d200 and grip, I will have my d300 and grip this week. Noise reduction and 8 fps are huge for me since I do gymnastics...Indoors and High ISO since no flash is allowed. Im so excited I cant contain myself! |

This is my first D300 outing.
Keep in mind I am still learning the camera. Shot in raw, ISO's ranging 200 to 2000. Used 50mm 1.8D. |

Got to agree with you there. I was speaking from my point of view and photography style. Hope the noise control is what it is cracked up to be. I have to admit I'm not as happy as I thought I would be with the D200's noise at high ISO. Good luck and have fun with the new gear.

I ordered it. Sorry for the silly response.
The D3 has been shipping on a prioritized basis for two week or so. Deliveries began first in the USA and later here in Canada. They made all buyers formally register and justify their professional status in order to prevent abuse from mass market eBay resellers (or so I was told), which makes sense based upon previous product releases for hot items.
Nikon is intent on having the initial buyers use the camera for personal use and not for resale. Secondarily, they want the initial products to go to professional users in order to gain feedback and visibility. Being a Nikon NPS member helps to raise the buyer up the ladder of preferred customers in the delivery queue.
They even set a criteria that the initial buyers (who are NPS members) had to own at least two Nikon bodies and three Nikkor lenses as a minimum. Actually, this is the minimum standard for NPS membership which is by default a prerequisite for early delivery. Again, "or so I was told". I can easily meet this standard due to a severe addiction to all things - Nikon - and a physical inability to keep my credit cards in my wallet. lol
In the past, I have owned a pair of D1x, D100, D2x, etc. So, Nikon is fairly happy with me, even though I still suck big time as a photographer. lol So much for the value of my degree in photography, right? Technically, I am proficient. However creatively, most members here at DPC dance circles around me. So, perhaps Nikon is driven by money first and art second? lol The bottom line is that I do not intent to resell these cameras nor do I use eBay, so that helped too I suppose?

Yeah, it is a nice assortment, but there is nothing left for me to buy now, so I seek other retail therapy solutions outside of photography which is a far more expansive and therefore expensive universe.
So many lenses and so little time... lol

Take up astrophotography. That'll drain your bank account quicker than you can blink. :) |

How the heck do you even decide what lens to use? I would probably be found just staring at all the lenses trying to decide which one to use rather then taking pics, lol.

Been there, done that...
I have several Hasselblads, various lenses for them and even a complete X-Pan kit with all lenses.
My studio strobes are all Elinchrom and my equipment is supported by Manfrotto, all of these toys are used with a variety of handheld meters - light, spot, colour temperature and more, so I can do whatever I like in the studio too. I run the Nikon D2x via WiFi so I shot raw right to the desktop. My digital darkroom is comprehensive too. I run a new computer with 8 cores based upon the Intel Xeon processors. All displays are colour corrected as are the room lights. Working in motion picture film technology spoils you and these things become normal after a spell.
I also shoot video and edit the video and audio in the digital domain. I just wish I had some talent... ;-(
Here is a breakdown of my new digital darkroom workstation:
- Dual(2) x Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5335 2.0GHz Processor
- Intel S5000XVN Workstation Board
- 4GB FB-DIMM DDR2-667Mhz memory
- Intel SC5299WS Chassis with 670W Power Supply
- Dual (2) SATA II/3GB 320GB 7200rpm HD with RAID
- Nvidia Quadro FX1500 256M PCI Express x 16 Graphic card
- dual 24" NEC ASLCD24WMCX (wide) LCD Flat Panel
- LG 18X DVD±RW Rewriter
- Microsoft Digital Media Keyboard & Mouse
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
- Nikon LS9000 film scanner
- Agfa prepress flatbed scanner
- 9" x 12" tablet
- Canon 9900 printer
- HP4 laser printer
- HP compact colour printer
- Olympus dye sublimation printer
- Spider colour correction system
- and a ton of software and plug-ins, but mainly Adobe tools (Photoshop, Acrobat, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere, InDesign, etc.) and ACDSee professional workflow management

Interesting question. In the early days and past generations of equipment, I struggled with this approach. Now a days, I make a project out of it. For example, I once went to an airshow with just the D100 and an Nikkor 85mm f1.8 (sold this stuff a while ago). With the limitation of the equipment, it makes for some interesting images that demand unique perspectives. Here is an example.
Here is another from that same approach.

I have played around with it, but with my Nikon stuff. This image was taken with the Nikkor 1,000mm f11 including a x2 adapter on a D1x. So, in 35mm terms, it was about 3,000mm. The image is not cropped, that is the way is was framed in the shot. I needed to move back, perhaps to Australia to frame it better?

Nice shot... But real astrophotography means deep sky objects. And for that you'll need something like this :-)

Yes, OK, you caught me. Good one!
You see, I swore that I would never buy a digital lens and committed to buy only lenses that would work with both digital and film. But, I wanted to play with the 10.5mm, so I bought one this past summer. If is my only DX lens.
As I suspect you already know by your clever question, it will not work full-frame on the D3. However, the D3 will automatically detect the DX smaller flat exit pupil of the lens and drop the image scan downward to a DX frame format from the normal full-frame FX format. Sadly, the file size drops down to about 5-6 megapixels from just over 12 megapixels delivered in the FX mode. So, it is a definite step backwards.
Now, this is where the D300 will come into play. Can you see my genius are work here? lol It works with the DX lens at about 12 megapixels, so it is a suitable compromise.
I depart early tomorrow on a business trip, so when I get back I will give this D3/10.5mm combination a try and see how it works out? I will post an example next week when I return home to Canada. I only travel with the Nikon S7 as I hate dragging the DSLR back and forth through USA customs.

I agree with you completely. But, I live in the city and the ambient light limits suitable backyard viewing. Besides, I wake up at 4 or 5 every morning, so staying up late is not my best skill. I am getting too old I suppose. One day, doing real astrophotography would be delightful. Thank you for the inspiration. ;-)
