I spent 10 days this month working in northern Arizona. We swung by the Grand Canyon's Toroweap Overlook, on the north rim for a look-see. It's quite a site, and we only saw about half a dozen other people while we were there, probably because the drive is a bit rough.

Of course, one of the first things I did was to stand at the rim with my toe sticking over the edge for a wide-angle shot looking down my leg and across the canyon. I'm normally afraid of hights, but figure I was able to stand there because it looked so unreal due to the shear immensity, it probably didn't register as a real hight in my pea-sized brain! My friend saw me do this and said it would've just taken a decent gust of wind and.... (I didn't think of that, yikes!)

We also took a drive and a short hike through Zion National Park, in southern Utah:

You did well with your shots Strike, very nice! I've been to all those places and they are all beautiful and you photos do them justice. I loved Zion and we took a drive up to arches too, which is my personal fav. Hope to see you post some more.

Uh oh - Slippy's gone all naturist landscape shooter on us! ;)

Very nice work, dude. Stay away from cliff edges though, won't you?

Thanks!

I wonder what it's like for people who grow up in the area, always seeing scenery like that. If they take it for granted until they take a trip to Toronto and experience the flatness, or if they're really unlucky, and take a four hour drive along the 401 from Toronto toward Conrwall and experience the mind-numbing nothingness of southern Ontario as seen from the "Bore-O-1".

Where? I missed that one - mind you doesn't suprise me given the definite exhibitionist streak!

Just curious... the 3rd image on each row (the ones with the star effect): What lens you were you using and at what aperture on each?

Having lived in Utah for almost 20 years and making the drive from Montreal to London a few times I can tell you it is had to take the beauty of the Southwest for granted, specially around -30C.
I know what you men about the Grand Canyon, it is just and immense site it is hard to figure out where to start.

f/22
ISO 100
Shutter 1/200
Lens = Canon 24-70L at 24mm. (Nice guess,routerguy666.)

f/22
ISO 100
Shutter 1/40 (holding camera on a rail)
Lens = Sigma 10-20 at 10mm

For shots like these my preference so far has been to use aperture priority at f/22, and lock the exposure on a point in the sky near the sun where I don't want the blowout to pass. And/or, if I know I'm going to HDR the shot, I set the exposure on a spot a bit darker. I always chimp to see how much blowout there is.

Nice pics, SS. I guess you've never left the 401 'round Gananoque and the 1000 Islands? Quite scenic in it's own right.

I often begin begging and pleading with the wife to get off there and take the long way to my brother's house. She just tells me to shut up, because it's so much faster to stay on the 401. :-( But ya, 1,000 Islands is beautiful. :-)
