I am getting requests to do some outdoor family portraits, and was wondering what others might suggest for the best time of day for outdoor shooting in Tallahassee, FL. I was thinking around 2pm or 11am. Any suggestions?

2pm is about the worst time of day, light is harsh and directly overhead. YOu'll get the best light just after sunrise and just before sunset. This time of year, I schedule my families around 4:00 or 5:00 and pray we can get done before sunset.
If you MUST shoot midday, then you should find a shady spot to put them in. Direct sun is NOT your friend.

If you're in the shade or it's overcast, sure.
But, you should generally avoid the mid day sun like the plague. It's harsh and makes people squint. You'd be better served by early morning or late afternoon light.
There's a reason that the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset are referrred to as the "golden hours". |

I agree. I have not done portrait photography, but I get my best shots in late afternoon to sunset. The light is wonderful as it goes lower int he sky. For portraits, I would say late afternoon, so you get the wonderful lighting, but without the sunset color cast. |
