I was wondering if anyone knows if you can use the SB-800 flash as a remote flash but not have the built-in flash on the camera as the remote to fire the SB-800?

not without a SU-800 Commander Unit or some other IR flash communicator

what you CAN do:

Set OCF (on camera flash) to manual @ 1/128th power.
Set SB-800 to SU-4 (remote) mode.
Either shoot from further away, or close the aperture; either will minimize the amount of visible OCF.

Give us more info (where shooting, subject, etc.) & we can offer more detailed advice. Hope that helps...
