I thought the 20D has been discontinued and is no longer available. Are you referring to eBay or other used prices?

I was talking about ebay prices.

So I have an update:

jaimeDp's post really got me thinking. I am really interested in taking wildlife photographs and I could see myself taking pictures at sports events/concerts where I would not want to miss a potential good shot.

Also, A new camera is going to depreciate a lot more than a higher grade used camera which will probably retain the value its at at the moment. So i looked at Ebay and actually just bid on and won a used 20D in great condition which was bundled with a few lenses and came with a battery grip, 2 batteries bag etc.

I did end up paying a bit more than I had budgeted, but i figured, if was was going to spend the money, I don't want to leave room to wish I had got a better camera for a difference of 200 bucks or so. once your over 800 bucks the additional 200 does not seem to be all that more..

AT least that is what i'm trying to convince my self :))))

Thank you all for all the wonderful advice, and I hope I can repay some of that by taking some great photographs and sharing it with all of you.

Thanks.

Does that mean Nikon is saying to the consumers, "we allow less quality on the market than Canon alows."?

I'd say it means the Nikon sensor has 0.0001% dead pixels, whereas Canon upped the stakes and offers 0.00005%. Go Canon, yay!

My advice would be to buy the best camera you can afford as you will soon want to progress. i purchased my 400D only five months ago and already wish i could afford something better. If the 40D is within your budget then thats the one.

Why, what's wrong with the 400D?

I purchased my bottom-of-the-line bargain basement D40 about 6 months ago and I'm delighted with it. It does everything I need it to do.

The only thing I wish I could afford now is the Nikon 12-24mm lens.

Absaloutly nothing but when you have a new toy its great then you look at more expensive models and you see what extra bits they have and you want them or is that just me?

My point is just buy the best camera you can afford, i would have liked the canon mark1 or some other pro level but i simply cannot afford it but if i could thays what i would have. Its all to do with disposable income we all have a budget except the lucky few.

the 400d does what it does damned well, it's a great all round camera and mine performs valiantly whenever it is called upon. Sure, i'd like a 5d, but i'm probably going to wait for the replacement to come out and then upgrade to that. Or sooner if i come into some cash...

Oh, to the thread maker: congrats on your purchase :)

Congrats on your new "toy"; even though I went with Nikon just this summer. You'll really appreciate the extra glass', grip, batteries...etc.

Actually not the best move when it comes to digital cameras and growing. By the time you "grow in to" a camera, it's obsolete.

My philosophy is buy the one that fits your needs AND budget, spend the excess on the stuff that really matters, such as glass and lighting (which don't go obsolete within two years).

This is the most important element of selecting a camera.- can it do what you want to do.

Have you tried the "half press"?

Or, just simply take it out of auto mode, and use manual. No lag.
