Dr. John Brignell, a British engineering professor, has been keeping a list of the things caused by global warming. There are currently over 600. See the list and the links here

I know you were hoping this thread was dead, but this article is too funny. Global warming does all this? If you are not convinced that this is just hysteria, perhaps this list will help.

Just because a lot of people are over-reacting doesn't mean Climate Change isn't happening. That's like saying Apple isn't a good stock to own because some people wait in line for days for iPhones, carry Steve Jobs pics in their wallet or name their children iKid. :)

Phew. Now I can relax. I mean, by this logic, there aren't any terrorists, the gov't isn't trying to tap my phone, there's no issue with illegal aliens, America isn't falling further and further behind in educating its kids, torture isn't really bad, and we're winning the war in Iraq.

Thanks for showing me how to think!

But what if republicans are delusional? Then they wouldn't self-report any mental problem because they have deluded themselves into believing they don't have any.

Nah. That's a poll of self-reported mental health, not actual mental health. A distinction the article writer repeatedly ignores or confuses.

But that raises an interesting question: are you better off mistakenly thinking you're really sane when you're not or mistakenly thinking you're not when you really are? Or correctly knowing you're not?

I, of course, am perfectly sane. As am I.

HA HA HA HA HA!!!

Talk about schizophrenic, Michael Savage doesn't even use his own name on his radio show or book!

Michael Savage is the pseudonym of Michael Alan Weiner.

But, I guess right-wingers would make fun of Michael WEINER. They need to look up to guys with COOL NAMES! Like... SAVAGE! SAVAGE! SAVAGE!

:)

And, no, I'm not making fun of his original last name, I'm making fun of the fact that he feels the need to change his name so that he has credibility with his audience :)

a) It would do wonders for your own credibility if you could share how it is that you came by the knowledge that it is a "fact" that he felt "the need to change his name so that he has credibility with his audience".

b) I personally don't believe that he had to change his name to have crediblity. According to Wikipedia:

"He holds master's degrees in medical botany and medical anthropology and earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in nutritional ethnomedicine. As Michael Weiner, he has written a number of books on herbal medicine and homeopathy."

Sounds like he was pretty credible, even without a name change, to me.

( Disclaimer: I am not a fan of Michael Savage. I feel that his style is far too abrasive ).

P.S. What do you think the "facts" are as to why Randi Rhodes uses a stage name? Her maiden name was Randi Bueten; her married name is Randi Robertson. So why Randi Rhodes???? Schizophrenia, perhaps? Credibility? I'm curious.

a) It was (mostly) a joke. Notice the "HAHAHAHA!" at the beginning :)

b) "He has written a number of books on herbal medicine and homeopathy." I'm sure they're very good books. No, I'm not interested in reading them :)

"Randi Rhodes" - "Rhodes is a stage name chosen to honor Ozzy Osbourne's guitar player Randy Rhoads, whom Rhodes describes as "a consummate professional ... who lived to be the best." - Wikipedia

I couldn't find out why Savage changed his name. Maybe it was to honor the professional wrestler "Ric Savage." Maybe it was because he really wants to be a pornstar.

It's called a pen name. It's a common thing for intellectuals and academics to use a pen name to separate their "public" work from their scholarly work. Many people who find Weiner's work in nutrition etc useful and informative would not be fans of Savages diatribes at all.

I don't see any reason to imply that there's something "shameful" or "sordid" about Michael's reasons for choosing a pen name.

Maybe he named himself after Doc Savage, serialized superhero of the 1930s and '40s, who used his protean scientific genius as well as his fists to overcome evil.

Or perhaps he took the last name of Charles Savage, as the Wikipedia bio suggests:

"Savage spent many years researching botany in the South Pacific and has a background in alternative medicine. While in the South Pacific, he became fascinated with the 19th-century sailor Charles Savage, who was believed to be the man that first brought firearms to Fiji.[4] It is believed this was the source of his pseudonym"

So apparently the conference to discuss global warming itself is responsible for the co2 equivalent of 20,000 cars driving around for a year! No worries though, they will plant some trees and buy carbon credits!

If you are concerned about global warming, don't ya think maybe it is a good idea to have your summit at a good central location and have web casts???

This sums up why I'm a skeptic. The experts care more about talking about doing things about it then actually doing things about it.

I share your scorn of these meetings in bizarrely remote places ΓΆ€“ and the irony is not lost on me, but it doesn't make me doubt what's happening around us ΓΆ€“ often invisibly.

However, it does further compound my certainty that there is not enough creative thinking amongst governments to deflect these accusations of double standards. The mixed messages simply push the key information further into the background.

Sounds like good reasoning until we realize that in 1997 there were already an estimated 600 million cars in the world. Even assuming there aren't more now we're talking about 3/1,000 of a percent of the annual problem.

Don't you think your skepticism is throwing the baby out with the bathwater?

If the experts don't see reason to conserve, why should I? Saying the output is relatively small when compared to rest of the planet is a horrible justification for their careless choice of location.

So where would be more central for a global summit ?

Any place other then a small island requiring a lot of AC and chartered flights to get to.

Shall I start a list?
