DxO have just announced the availability of their RAW processing software, Optics Pro v5.
//www.dxo.com/intl/photo
It looks pretty good from the spec sheet. I'd love to try out a demo, but their site seems really slow at the moment for downloading. So if anyone else has a chance to try it out, please post here and let us know how you find it. |

I just checked last night to se if this was released. Im interested in the demo as well, especially how it compares to v4.5.
I tested v4.5 with a lot of different images just to see how its default settings would alter them.
I never got results as demonstrated by looking at the images on their site but it did automatically make some nice, albeit subtle, adjustments to images. |

| Well, it looks like their site is down at the moment. It obviously couldn't cope with the load. I'll check later. |

I purchased the upgrade last night and tried it on one photo. The jury is still out (I need more experience with the new version before I comment). I do like the new UI better than the old.
But from what I've seen already, I still have a couple of gripes... like when you adjust a parameter, I like to see the image show my adjustments "as I make them". Instead, it blurs out the image momentarily while it makes its calculations and then brings the image back into view when done. Visually (and mentally) it is so disruptive that I can't remember what it looked like "before" my adjustment in order to know whether I prefer the before or the after. I much prefer Lightroom's handling of adjustments.
It was also still pretty slow converting a 5D image into a 16bit Tiff. I was kind of hoping to see a speed increase there. But actually I don't mind it too much. I only use DxO when I'm doing really big pictures and the quality just "has" to be there. And I'm generally more patient when I know that's what I'm getting.
But there is no way I could ever replace LR with DxO for the bulk of my raw conversions. It's just not fast enough.

Thanks for that. I was curious if they'd improved the performance. That method of interacting with the software wasn't very intuitive to me in version 4.5, and it sounds like they haven't done much to improve it.
I hated the idea of making adjustments and not getting immediate feedback, and it was probably the slowest converter I tried out. |

That's weird, I'm getting the old "you do not have permission to view this site" message when I try to access V 5.0, even out of google. But I can reach V 4.0 just fine...

I think the UI is the biggest change. It'll take some getting used to. But I do think it's an improvement over the old UI (but still similar enough that if you got used to the old, you'll be able to figure out the new).
The other thing I really want to try out ... they tout their new method for handling noise reduction. I'm going to have to try converting a High ISO image done with DxO and compare it against LR.

Yeah! Finally. I tried 4.5 but it lacks the 40D and newer lenses.

Yeah, the site is still down. It must be getting hammered with downloads. I can't even access their homepage anymore. What a way to run a business; making the big announcement but not able to handle the load. |

Was just about to post the same thing:
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /intl/photo on this server.
I thought they had "found out" about me LOL

Well I finally got to it and while it supports the 40D, there are only 4 lenses offered with it?
Canon EF17-40mm f/4L USM Free DEMO
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Free DEMO
Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Free DEMO
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Does this mean that I cannot use it if I shoot with any other lens on my 40D?
If so, the program is useless.

They'll be adding more for sure; they have a full complement for the 20D. They have to do tests on all lenses and correlate the data so you can have automatic lens-distortion correction, and this is all different for every camera body/lens combo. Or this is what I assume anyway...
In other words, if you want to use the program for anything besides automatic lens distortion correction, this doesn't matter anyway.

Thanks Robert.

| Has anyone had the opportunity to try both v4.5 and 5? Is 5 a pretty big improvement, especially in the speed department? |
