No sour grapes here, I didn't participate in the "topless" challenge and this is just an example, but in the last months (more and more often) I ask myself: "Why did the voters stop to look for technicals whenever they see something "creative" or "original"? When did the times pass, when correcting the tilt of an image was the first step? Is White Balance to be ignored these days? Can humor adjust an obvious lack of composition?

In October 2006 this

scored 5.94 and made a 54th place (222 votes, 39 votes of 8 and higher). I thought that was quite fair (except for the 16 votes of 3 and lower).

In November 2007 this

scores 6.44 and makes a 5th place (229 votes, 61 votes of 8 and higher). I just don't get it.

Don't get me wrong, ZeppKash probably didn't know my image, so of course he shall be happy with his HM.

Now hit me.

It's true, Ollie...you do suck very much. Of course, I wasn't here a year ago, so I'm not sure if you're sucking more or less than at that time. ;-)

I can't say I'll continue to try to figure out how or why people vote how they do. Maybe one would be advised to check the biorhythm charts, or the moon phases...I've entered images that I felt were meh, and scored well...then, I've entered an image I personally liked very much, and found myself square in the middle of Mediocresville. If it's any consolation whatsoever, I like your banana shot. I'd probably have given it a seven and a really clever, zippy comment...like "that's very a-peel-ing" or somesuch.

Could it be a factor that as an inherently technical topic, a lighting challenge pretty much voters to look at technicals such as lighting and white balance to determine if the participant met the challenge? "Topless," on the other hand, is a more whimsical topic that lent itself to more humorous interpretations.

I feel that despite the fact that these are both banana shots, we may be comparing apples and oranges.

Context is everything!!! Taking the two pictures out of context, it looks as you may be right; but when each one is seen within their respective challenges you can see why the difference in voting!!

Dude! I've seen your portfolio.....you know what's up.

The one is definitely about technicals, the other, context.

The Topless entry in context, is FUNNY!!!!!

ClubJuggle, Rgarcia and NikonJeb, you are all right, but what I'm talking about is: Is there no longer a need for a funny/creative/original entry to be technically good?

I don't want to start a "new thread" for this and since this thread's topic is on the same challenge I want to gripe about then...

Ok, didn't the title say "Topless...With No People"? Then how is it that 1st place has a person in it?! And yes before you bite my head off, I DID read the description. I'll even post it at the end of my rant. It's just that I would've considered the person in this picture as part of the main subject.

Now, congrats to senor_kasper for an excellent photo

It's still more of a photo that what I could produce with my current getup.

Description
Create a photo in which your subject is topless. The photo may not have a person as its main, topless subject.

The car appears to be the main subject IMO, and directly correlates with the title of the image as well.

edit - can't spell!

You have answered your own question.

"Create a photo in which your subject is topless. The photo may not have a person as its main, topless subject.

The main Topless subject is the car...

Edit: DAD is too fast for me.
