Artist-in-Residence project with North West Wales NHS Trust, Gwynedd
North West Wales NHS Trust is initiating a sustained program of `Arts in Health & Well-being` projects, following a successful artist-in-residence pilot at their main hospital site, at Ysbyty Gwynedd
Ysbyty Gwynedd is the North West Wales NHS Trusts district general hospital at Bangor serving the health community of Gwynedd and Isle Anglesey, which comprises a large geographical spread of both urban and (predominantly) rural areas. The residency pilot proved an important development in the thinking behind, support for and planning of arts activity in the NW Wales Trust. As a result, there is now strong commitment to progress further with arts in health activity of both high quality and adventurous caliber, and to integrate arts and health into wider strategic planning within the Trust. Liz Aylett is the Trusts Lead for Arts in Health & Wellbeing and will be co-managing the program with PAW, at a local level. Her role offers a key link to the Trusts Executive Group to which she reports on AiH&WB progress, developments and wider issues
A new year long artist residency project has now been agreed, in partnership with Safle and Gwynedd County Council, due to commence in spring 2008. The Trust has recently initiated its own âArts in Health and Wellbeing Programâ and this new residency will form an important strand as well as contribute to the Trustâs Strategic Aims and Action Plan. Further weight will also be given to the residency by the Trustâs new Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) partnership, encouraging health care venues to open up further to its communities as hosts of events, workshops, exhibitions etc. It is considered that arts in health plays an important role within the PPI agenda and can make significant contributions to the organizations relationship/ interface with patients, visitors, volunteers and staff, through a variety of artistic projects and events.
The development of this residency and NW Wales Trustsâ dynamic interest in arts and health is also particularly timely, given the wider national interest and commitment to arts in health particularly by Arts Council of Wales, who have run conferences recently on the subject, and are in the process of finalizing their own ten-year `Arts in Health & Well-being Strategy 2007-2017â.
The Residency Project The residency will have a dual approach, with two artists in post, each with their own particular remit but with a strong collaborative aspect. The overarching aim will be to work with staff and patients within Ysbyty Gwynedd and other local health care venues, as well with local communities further afield within the Trustâs catchment area, developing arts activities and projects that have a lasting impact, building links between community and the health care settings, and creating more welcoming, interesting health care venues.
Both artists will be based initially at Ysbyty Gwynedd. The two artists will be able to feed into the development of a full Arts Strategy for the Trust, and help research future art commissions and activity programs, as well as becoming the key points of access for arts development on the ground. There could also be the opportunity for the artists to initiate ideas, proposals and designs for more permanent Capital artworks in consultation with the project steering group and the Capital Investment Board. Further funding would need to be sought for any development of this aspect to the project.
Residency 1.
This will focus on working directly with staff and patients in the hospital. The artist will consult with the project steering group to identify departments, areas, staff to work with and explore the potential within the hospital wards and waiting areas to engage with visitors and patients. There will be the opportunity to identify locations for temporary artworks created, exhibitions to be set up, presentations and events to take place.
Residency 2
The second artist will develop projects outside the hospital, in community-based venues with health care remits. Links will be made, in collaboration with Gwynedd Councilâs `Community Arts Development Officer`, to community health care groups, in the broadest sense. Contacts may be made for example, with mental health agencies, substance misuse organizations, sexual health clinics, Sure Start, Gwynedd Council`s Care Directorate, homes for the elderly, hospices, health-related charities and voluntary sectors. Following local consultation this work may be undertaken with both adults and/or children, dependent on local drivers/needs.
