I found this great recording download thanks to you guys. Do any of you who use this know why it might be that when we record a 2nd track over the first, the timing is way off. And no, it's not my husbands timing :)
Last try with a new thread title:) |

My best guess would be some sort of latency, likely hard drive access or processor speed.
While I can't remember exactly how to change this, recording each track in mono instead of stereo may help.

No idea what you are talking about but it you would probably get more response if you told us what and would bump your original thread instead of starting new ones.

Sounds like track lag. The input on the sound card is not syncing up with playback. What is the software and soundcard you are using and is there anything else in the signal path?

software is called Audacity and we are using headphones to listen to the first track while playing the second. Is this maybe it? |

Audacity's pretty nice software (being free and all).
What are your preferences under edit-->preferences... Are you using audio I/O "play other tracks while recording new one"?

If you are using any MIDI tracks with an internal sound card, it is quite common for delays to happen on the MIDI track, as the sound cards have a delay in playing MIDI tracks. I haven't used Audacity, but this is a common problem with all recording software. Often there is a configuration setting to account for this delay, but it doesn't help in all cases. |

it wasn't checked, but I checked it and tried again and still way off. We are sitting close...the computer and the mic. Could that be it?

Sometimes you have to actually adjust a number, not just a checkbox. If the number is zero, the checkbox on/off does nothing. :)
Could you post more details. Is the first track voice or MIDI? Is the 2nd track voice or MIDI? Are you using any effects on either channel? What computer have you got (i.e. is it fast enough)? What sound card do you have? |

Check if you've got other "playback devices" and "recording devices" in the preferences box, and try them.
(Audacity has accounted for latency in the soundcards I've used & latency has not been a problem with me.) |

Are you trying to synch with the sound coming from the speakers on playback?
Trying to synch with the screen is almost impossible (every soundcard has a certain amount of latency anyway--so will either play later than the visual display, or record later than it).

Just checking: How could you hear the track if the box "play other tracks while recording new one" was unchecked? |
