I'm looking to buy a decent flash for my E500.

I haven't even thought about price yet, and I've done minimal searching on-line, but it appears that there is a fairly wide range of options and prices.

I'm not determined to get an Olympus unit. If there is a third-party flash that works well and costs less I'd think about that too.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Are you looking for on-camera flash with automatic TTL metering, or are you more likely to be going down the off-camera, all manual, strobist route?

I think on-camera for now.

Unfortunately, most 3rd party manufacturers don't support Oly cameras that I know of.

My dad bought a Pro-Master 5750 for his Oly 8080 which works quite nicely for the limited use he gives it.

WHen I shot with Olympus stuff, I used the Fl36, and the Fl50. Both were great flashes. THe 50 was more powerful and had a few extra features I was more concerned with at the time I upgraded. Either would be a great choice for your camera.

When I was looking just about everything I read recommended using the manufacturers flash for the most fully integrated TTL and Auto functions. I got the FL50 and I'm satisfied with the results. I did get a cord to position the flash off camera.

I'd recommend sticking with one of the Olympus flashes unless you have a strong reason to go with another.

Thanks for the advice. Looks like the Olympus model is the way to go. I'll start saving my pennies.

I agree with MattO. The FL36 and Fl50 are the best bets. Heck I even bought my FL36 from MattO still working great:) The FL50 is a better flash and has quick recycle times, and is nice on batterys then the FL36. One drawback I did find is the FL36 doesn't really like rechargeable batterys since it only takes 2 AA's. The prices for these flashes will be coming down since Olympus is releasing the the FL36R and FL50R flashes that will be radio controled.

My FL36 just arrived! I'm tickled.

This is the first new equipment I've bought in a long time. I'll post some pics ASAP.

Thanks for all the advice and guidance.
