Hey go for it! I bought a similar package from ebay and its great. You get a lot of stuff for the money. Its not pro gradestuff but it is very useful when you are just learning and starting out. If you are on a tight budget this is a great deal.

Here are a few shots using said lights that I bought.

Now these might not be up to some peoples standards but I would not have been able to take these shots without lights. It is still a learning process for me. I would also suggest a light meter if you don't already have one.

Have fun with them!

Cant I suggest another kit or two?

Try this 300 watt/seconds per strobe
- equivalent to the AB800. I use the 160 w/s versions of these strobes, but they seem to be out of stock.

You'll notice you're not paying much more for these than the e-bay strobes you are showing, and getting better equipment.

You can get one strobe kits in 160w/s versions for about $150 each, if ya want to build up your kit.

If the "kit" is good (the stands, the boxes, the umbrellas etc) it's a fine buy. You can always upgrade the heads later as finances allow and need requires. The low-power heads will always be useful as key lights, BG lights, etc.

If you look on ebay you can get all that stuff cheaper than the lot itself. FYI I just bought this.

I bought this set. Still waiting for it to arrive (mail is slow to Korea!) Before I purchased it I emailed the photographers he has listed as using his equipment and got their opinions of using his equipment before purchasing. I know on a lot of forums people bash these kits, but for the price I thought it was worth it to start out.

I also bought this set in order to use with my Vivitar flashes, and I am pleased with the photos I took with them last night. I know that these umbrellas are not the best, but for working in my living room they did fine.

Joe, with people investing in near gear, DPL2 should be a lot better for the Strangers. You have that fancy D40 that already netted you a yellow, and now you have lights, and I have a 40D and lights on the way. It should be fun!

seems to be the time of year for lighting purchases :)

I went the strobist route and spent $500 at B&H on 2 vivitar flashes, stands, 43" umbrellas, adapters and lots more.

Congrats on all your purchases!

Congrats on your lighting purchases to all. I was looking in to lighting as well. I was wondering if you guys could take a few photos with your new setups and in the comments write what type of lighting you were using so I can get an idea of how the lighting looks.

Thanks.

Well, I haven't tried them for good just yet. Only opened up the case, and turned the lights on, snapped a few shots of me... I am going to test them with my son tomorrow and post the results here.

My camera liked it though, I can tell :)

Finally I can do some better photography in-house. I had this $3 construction light thingy with regular light bulb... it was pretty difficult to get right amount of lights with that thing. These guys lid up like daylight, no heat, eyes don't bother... pretty happy about it and they cost only $103(+tax and shipping) :)

First real test. The lights, even though not expensive, works pretty good for a starter :)
