So about 10 years ago, I came up with an idea and constantly joked with my co-workers that I was going to become rich off of it. My idea was "Musical Rumble Strips" on highways.

You know when you're driving and they have rumble strips on the road to warn you about one thing or another? I thought it would be cool if they spaced the grooves on the road in such a way that it would make a song as you drive over them.

I was always joking around about this idea, saying I was going to quit my job there and develop this concept.

So, this morning I got a message from a former co-worker who I literally haven't heard from since around 1999:

Japan stole your musical roads idea:

Yet another opportunity lost for me.

Sorry you missed out, but that's a very cool idea! You could turn Pachelbel's Canon into a speed metal song just by stepping on the accelerator. :-)

Great. Cars full of stoned teenagers driving down the rumble strips to the tune of "Stairway to Heaven". I can't wait.

My other idea was to take it a step further and try to make it synthesize a voice as you drive over them. You could be driving and the road could tell, "Slow down... you're going to kill somebody!" Or whatever.

Nah, they'd just play Feelin' Groovy.

Well, some engineer designed a long bridge near my hometown in NC with a rhythmic up and down motion if you cross at about the posted speed limit. It will flat put you to sleep. ;)

No doubt -- wait until they try and confiscate all the "pirated copies."
