before I crash my hard drive. My computer is starting to creep because of so many picture files. I'm way behind on backing up since the birth of my son and I don't know where to begin now. I've also started to shoot in raw lately and have no clue where to store my raw files either. I use to upload everything to smugmug but I don't think I can do that with my raw files or can I? Where do I start? I really don't won't to burn to cd's because they don't hold much. HELP!

You need an external hard drive, a FireWire one, if you don't have much time. |

Zeuszen,
Is there a particular brand or type I should look for? Also, do you know of any good deals online? I'm on a tight budget since I purhcased my 70-200 lens. Thank you.

I have 2 Seagate externals, they're affordable at Best Buy and never given me any trouble.

Most of the name-brand ones are good: Western Digital, Seagate, Buffalo, IBM, etc.
Most come in both firewire and USB 2.0 configurations. For basic backups, etc. both will serve you well. You'll find some pretty heated discussions on the differences between the two, but for your own personal use, it's a toss-up.
As Cindi states, it's better to have two because in the data storage world, redundancy is your friend. Back up to both drives. Having both drives with the same data ensures that if one were to go south, you still have your data. If you are really paranoid about not losing your data, you would keep one of those drives outside your house (say, at your office or neighbor's house) and bring it in once a week to copy from the main external drive to it.

As others have already said, many brands are available. I like LaCie and G-Tech G-Force drives. This is where I usually start out. |

Remember that HD failure is not a matter of if, but when - if you have one copy of your data you will lose it. Flickr seems like a good option for remote storage of images; mozy also looks good though I haven't used it. |
