I do not want to name this postprocessing stud, who is well known on our site. I spent time with his portfolio and found for most of the pictures there was no reason to exist, other than just show off some post processing skills. |
I agree with you on that last part. I was at an exhibition this weekend and looked at some work of a photographer that was heavily processed. The initial photo would've been from a concert of some sort. Now we all know those are hard because of bad lighting and usually no flash allowed etc. So the only thing to do is boost the ISO and shoot. This was very obvious in those shots, and (to me anyway) the photographer was just trying to salvage a bad grainy shot by some heavy PP, and then call it 'art'
only thing I think at that moment: "Yea sure...Moving on!!" |

1)When you take a photo, what are you thinking?
2)Does every picture have to convey a meaning?
3)Can a photograph not simply be taken because it looks nice?
4)Sure, there are photographs that tell stories or convey moods, but does every photograph have to be this way?
These are philosophically loaded questions. I don’t think you are really looking to have a discussion about ontological truths etc. So I will answer you in the manor I imagine (perhaps wrongly) that you would prefer.
1.My thinking is not that static. My thoughts range from the mundane to the poetic. I think it is probably common for me to be considering how the equipment and settings and context etc. will affect the eventual photograph. I am still in a place where thinking technically is often required if I am going to get what I want.
2.Meaning is a tricky subject even when I am trying not to philosophize. But no is my answer. Not in the “wow, this will be recognized by others as socially cogent or pregnant with intellectual meaning” sort of way. If others label such photos as trivia, though, you shouldn’t mind too much – right?
3.That which pleases you and causes no injustice, do. It does not follow that anyone else will or should be equally pleased.
4.No, see answer 3.

You guys are so serious. I like to SEE things. For instance, I would like to see "the manor I imagine (perhaps wrongly) that you would prefer." (Bernard-Marx). |

It's certainly interesting to see how people feel about this topic... I'm more on the 'photography documents things' side of things, I take pictures for all sorts of reasons... |
