however, if your primary interest is in portraits, then by all means consider a specific lens for this task.
Since I am just learning about lenses, are there certain ones you would suggest I look at? I've looked through the lenses here on DP but it's hard to distinguish what does what. I am mainly after sharpness and just all around quality/color. |
Both Doc_Gonzo and Soup above reccommend the 85 f1.8. It is I believe a very fine lens and notable for portrait work. Several pro portrait fotogs use single focal primes in the 60-90mm range for their work. The key to a portrait lens is to have the subject not compressed into the background (as is typical of zooms) nor without relationship to the background (as can happen with wider angled lenses). The 85mm f1.8 has been a staple portrait lens for many many years. I am partial to Nikkors, however Sigma has quite a reputation and following as well.
Great photographs (whether portraits or otherwise) is all about capturing light. Better lenses capture light better.

to build a zoom of the same optical quality as a prime costs more money. the prime will always be less expensive.

i'll toss in my 2c too
skip the 50/1.8 get the 60mm/2.8 macro
it is the one thing that the 18-200 won't do
(&yer portfolio shows you done some) &
it makes for a good portrait lens as well

When I ordered my 300 I was told the ship date was November 21st. I don't know if that is totally accurate or not, but that is what I was told. I can't wait!
As far as lenses, if you can at all afford it the 70-200 2.8 is SWEET! I got it last night and I am in love already. That was just shooting stuff in the house. I also added a 2x converter.
My 50mm 1.4 is pretty nice as well.
The 70-300 lens I am not crazy about. It actually is probably going to be put in the hubby's camera bag because I don't like it. I actually do like the 18-135 for an every day lens. |

Well, here's what I ordered tonight (assuming all orders go through):
Nikon D300 Digital SLR Camera (Body)
Nikon 18-200 f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Lens
Nikon 50mm F/1.8 D AF FS=52 Lens
Nikon SB-800 AF TTL Speedlight
I bought from three different retailers. I got decent prices and free shipping on the lenses, but I blew the savings on shipping costs for the camera (thanks, Beach Camera).
People have been critical of the 18-200, but I've seen some beautiful examples of what it can do, here on this site and on others. |
