I tried hijacking someone else's thread, which was rude (and didn't work) so I'll start a new one... (although I don't mind hijacking by others who may want the same kind of feedback).

Both of these finished at 52% (I'm consistent!). Average for DPC. Where can I improve?

p.s. It's perfectly OK to say these are boring. Or not interesting. Or poorly composed, poorly edited, or just plain "blah".

Left some comments, Deb. Mediocresville is actually one of the more prestigious, yet understated towns here in DPCLand - on the bright side, you could be in a trailer park in Suck City. :)

Ah, but I DO have a very lovely trailer in Suck City. Team Suck has an excellent trailer park. In the evenings we sit out under our awnings and watch the stars come out. It's really quite nice.

Sit under the awnings and see the stars ?

Wow those awnings suck - the material should be way thicker than that . .

It's a fantasy trailer park, after all. The awnings are a very special clear material that still keeps the rain (should it rain) off of our cameras and barbeque grills. Gotta protect the good stuff. Oh, and during the day, it darkens to keep the sun from beating down on our trailers. Kinda like those glasses that change color in sunlight. Nifty awnings...

I meant to post this in your hijack thread, but forgot. On your 'something new' entry something looks wrong with the exposure/contrast. It looks overexposed, or perhaps the white balance is too cool, I can't quite put my finger on it.

Cool. I'll see what I can do with it. It's shot in jpeg so I can't do white balance, but I can play with colors and exposure. And it could be because it was about 2 pm in the afternoon local time when I took the shot. Appreciate the input!

Oops - I lied. This was indeed shot in RAW, so I went back and re-edited from RAW. Any better??

I gave the portrait of the old man a 7. I thought it had a lot of great detail and character. The only issue I had with it was that he appeared to be leaning some to one side. Playing around with curves and shadows might improve it some, but that's something that has to be tried to see how it comes off.

This image appears to have been taken too close to midday to still be enjoyable to look at. Mid-tones and highlights are harsh and the shadows block much detail.

While this image has been much improved, the shadow detail remains compromised.

FWIW, quite the opposite's happening here. Shadow detail has been brought out nicely, albeit at the expense of loosing some overall contrast and tone. When comparing it with the original image,

it doesn't, to my sense, come out ahead. It's near-HDR feel does not (or so I perceive) do the subject as much justice as the more natural look of the original (above). -I'd try to subdue the two highlights in the bokeh (to the left of the face) and probably crop a tad less tight as you did to avoid any undue emphasis on the man's nostrils.

Appreciate the feedback and insights. The "New" shot was indeed shot close to midday. I kinda had to leave before the light would have been better (helicopters aren't going to wait, you know...). I realize now it probably isn't appropriate for a challenge entry. I still like the shot, though.

The older gentleman - I actually prefer the original edit. I did "tonemap" the challenge entry in an attempt to please the voters. I suspect the original edit would have finished at least two tenths lower.

I think I'm coming to the conclusion that I just don't "see" the editing possibilities - and it may be mostly because I'm too stubborn. I tend to like very simple edits, but I also realize that in most cases, that's not enough to create a photograph that will do well here, or anywhere else.

Left ya a couple of comments. I really like the old guy, but the tone mapping was maybe unnecessary. In my mind, the "new" shot suffered most from being in the wrong challenge.

As far as "seeing" the editing possibilities....I don't "see" them either. All I really see is corrections to what's already there. So I'm actually forced to learn how to take good pictures to start with. Not so bad a thing, really....I just wish the learning process were faster.
