I think posting full sized pictures is a wee bit frowned upon, as the whole site starts getting a bit slow to open. html for links to pictures elsewhere, or thumbnails for the same are ok, I'm thinking (you could send a polite note to SC and ask)

Great to see you back. Hit by a stage diver?

yeah i was shooting M.D.C. last night and turned back to talk to the photographer who's site i put up today. When i turned back there was a guy flying at me from the stage.

after i got up, the lcd on the camera was completely black and i thought it was broken. upon closer inspection i realized that when i got hit, the setting on the camera changed to the view pictures setting and the picture i was viewing was black. i set it back to shutterspeed priority and kept shooting.

i also think i cracked a bone in my hand but at least the camera's okay.

punk photographer's know the risk.

Yeah, well.....that was the point of my raspberry to Catherine. I was talking to her offline and whining about how it just "Doesn't seem to be happening" and she kind of spiritually kicked me in the @$$ and told me to quit whining and get out there.

I feel it's starting to pay off if for no other reasopn that I'm easily seeing where I'm making the mistakes and starting to correct them, and correct for them, before it's too late.

Thanks, Catherine!.....8>)

ETA that this is just a quick fix, if you want me to look at the original I will take some time to make sure it is perfect for you. :)

Hi all

Deb, glad you're going back to where things go boom! if that's the lesser of two or three evils...

Chris, omg, getting fired and arrested and breaking a bone in your hand - jeez, how're any of us gonna top that?! :-)

Jeb, cool pic of the cheerleader, guess you could always just clone the crap out of the scoreboard. Still a great facial expression.

OK gotta run now!

Speaking of snap shooters, if you want to see two excellent examples here at DPC check out:
boysetsfire
and
sevilduvarci

Wonderful stuff they have.

Kind of last minute, but I've got a shot in for Single Light Source.

Hm. Neither of them has shown us what I consider to be snapshots, but neither does Deb, her protestations to the contrary notwithstanding (sorry, I'm a lawyer, and I need to use a phrase like that at least once each day or my heart starts to grow back; can't have that now, can we?).

Deb says: "I point, I shoot, be it with the SLR or the P&S. I do, however, try to take into account background, light angles, reflections, etc, as much as possible when I do point and shoot. My picture of the camel and her owner, for instance, required me to get on my knees because the background was so cluttered."

That's not a snapshot in my book; as I see it, snapshot shooters don't realize they need to get on their knees, don't understand the effect of light angles and reflections, and never see the background (not even in the print). But Deb does this; she's not snap shooting, she's paying attention to her subject. Same for boysetsfire and sevilduvarci. They do catch immediate moments in time, moments that happen for a split second that so many of us miss, or see differently, or misinterpret, and they present those for us to see and consider. But the elements that are included, the angles, the perceptions created, seem very purposeful to me. They are not simply captures of moments in time, they are captures of particular, specific moments in time in a particular, considered way. And I would guess, having looked at what I can of their work, that they accept everything that is in an image they present to us, not expecting a viewer to look past or beyond any part of that image. If you look past something in one of their images, you miss something, perhaps something important, at that, about the image as a whole.

In a snapshot, I might have a really distracting light in the background. It adds nothing to the image. It detracts, saying nothing, but simply being there as a mistake. I expect people to look around it, to ignore it, and look at the cute kitty I captured. If I could do it again, I would try not to have the light in there (no, my current entry in the free study is not a kitty; it has different issues).

To me, that is part of the difference between presenting a snapshot and presenting something, well, something else. One has thought about process, the other has not. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot to say for snapshots. They hold my memories (those seem not to stay in my head), remind me of good times, help me share good times others have had, and more. But to my eye, Deb, Nick and Sevil do not do that with what they show us here.

Of course, definitions are all relative, and this is all just my perception, based on my understanding and limited experience (both worldly and photographically). It's still fun to try to hash this stuff out and see what everyone else thinks; I learn a lot talking to you guys :)

Best,

Rob

tell you what...

do all that and then still manage to get some shots and we'll call it a draw.

i just added two new pictures to my portfolio that were taken shortly after i got hit on saturday night. they're both of a band called M.D.C. at the Gilman Project in Berkeley. I wish the one with the kid in it came out better but couldn't resist using it anyways.

(p.s.I have long since forgotten how to post images in the forum)

Wow, you're a tough guy to keep down! Glad you're back! Will go check out pix too, been so long since I've seen any of your stuff.

BTW...though I certainly didn't have a broken hand, I was being dragged around by a Great Pyrenees while shooting for Duotone...and I DID plan to shoot for Popcorn, honest I did, but my subject *mysteriously* vanished...

To all Teamsuck members, you may have noticed or not that over the last few months I have been lower in profile than normal, not giving as many comments but still voting and entering as many challenges as possible to keep the mind focused. 3 CHEERS for DPC

Now has come a time in life I will have to make it through by keeping a positive attitude until the 10th Dec 2007 when I go into hospital to have a defribrilator inserted, this will not repair the problem hopefuly it will reduce the fatalaty risk. This has been brought about by the efficiency rate of the heart dropping. Normal 55-65% Bad 30% Mine 14%.
So when you see my user name hywind just keep smiling.
Cheers to all.

Keep fighting, but don't be too aggressive. The power of DPC works wonders, there will be many who will be willing you to better health. There is no giving up until the Fat Lady Sings, hang in there and we will help send you any positive energy you need!

Good Luck and keep smiling:)

Well, I'm in for Duo-tones.......it's an interesting entry, and I'm twitching 'cause I can't really talk about it.

Suffice it to say that you will all be amused when it's over and I tell you about it. I predict high 4/low 5, and possibly a comment from Fearless Leader.

hywind, hang in there, and since mt religion prevbents certain ceremonies, I'll sacrifice of bowl of pasta for you, and some of the TSers'll tell you that's not going to be pretty! LOL!!!

Hang in there, man!

I don't know what it is, but these kids just light up for my camera.

They're a great gang, they work their tails off for each other on the team, and they are truly.....beauty in motion.

I feel privileged that they like having me around.

Hi everyone. I've been incredibly busy at work lately, and still pretty busy at home, so I haven't been around much. I'm still shooting, just not much lately for challenges.

I see TS bubbles right along, which is great. :) Christian, I'm glad your boat was okay. Brian, I hope you feel better after your surgery. Deb, keep those wonderful travelogue pics coming. Umm ... and everyone else, keep being yourselves. :)

And Jeb, only one more night until I can share my free study entry with ya; I think you'll like it.
11/06/2007 08:29:36 PM · #1567
Well Brian, you know I am always there for you mate, as you and Carol are very dear friends.

I know this will be successfull, and give you a much better quality of life, and less risks, so it is so worth the hospital visit, to get it all fixed.....

We look forward to seeing you in a couple of days, when we come up at the weekend.

Have I mentioned lately that I love Team Suck and all its wonderful constituents?

Iraq is actually the most "dangerous" of the three locations, driving in Kuwait notwithstanding. But the boss says I am to go there, so to there I shall go. Waiting to hear on availability of housing, but will borrow a sleeping bag and camp out in the office if that's the option. I am going to try to get back to Kuwait for a week or two, photographic non-opportunities and all, just to spend some time with my "homies" there. Good people.

Brian, hang in there, think good thoughts, enjoy your visit with Shez and Peter, and know that the rest of us are pulling for you from all corners of the planet!

RobH, gotta say I'm not in the same class as Sevil and Nick (though I aim to be some day!), but I really do appreciate the kind words, and you've done an excellent job of "analysis" on their styles. They may actually have that annoying light behind the cat, but somehow they make it part of the picture, not a distraction. So I know what you mean. I just don't know how they pull it off so well.

I think you'll need to undertake a secret task assigned by our fearless leader before you can be assigned to a team, Robert, though you're just what we need here: another Robert!

Christian, yes, glad you rescued your boat, well done. What, no photos? :P

Brian, I may not have said it (I should have), but I've been thinking about you and your heart, and it's good to get an update, even one with some uncertainty in it (life is often uncertain, why is it then we are so hesitant to talk about it?). Do what they say, and we'll keep our thumb pressed (or fingers crossed, it's up to you). I'll be looking for your username on the pages.

Deb, I hope you get to sleep where you'd prefer to sleep, and that you can move on again real soon.

Chris, welcome back and nice to meet you, looking forward to more of your shots. Since you've forgotten, to embed a thumb in the forum, just grab the image number from the image page, click on the second icon from the right in the set of five icons above the "post" box, put the number in there, and you're set. I like the webpage you set up, although the gallery pictures scroll by a little quick for me in "bands" (not when I was looking, but when I was reading, which lead to me reading and not looking to try to finish in time).

Jeb and Ernie, nice combining of talents to get out of an image what you wanted to get out. I'm guessing that edit wouldn't be legal in advanced, right (because you're not allowed to remove bits that change the viewer's perception)? Or am I wrong about that? It's a great shot and processing, anyway!

Okay, to work now! Enjoy your day, all.

RobH

P.S. My posts are all long again! Ugh!
