Is it still a rule that you have to vote on a certain percentage of photos before your vote counts? Some entries are honestly not worth my time. I would prefer a voting system where I could vote on my favorites without constantly going in circles amongst 200 photos that I don't care for and have no opinion of. Anybody else's thoughts? |

nice, how would you feel if someone felt that way about your shot.

Also that prevents people having there friends register to only vote for their photos, I consider looking at all the photos, both good and not so good (which is what most of mine are) to be a part of the learning process, and I would hate to think that someone considers voting on my photo a waste of their time, There are so many photos on this site, both good and bad, but I think they all deserved to be looked at. |

I can't help but feel that you're playing devil's advocate here...
but have you thought that voting and commenting on photos you don't care for will improve your ability to judge what elements make a photo good and another not so good? It should improve your own pictures to give good critiques on ALL photos, so it's for your sake as well as others. |

Gotta agree with the others here. That just doesn't strike me as being a healthy attitude for this site, even though you have been (primarily) lurking here for quite a long time.
We learn from the good and the bad... just praising the best shots does nothing to promote learning, which is a goal of most people here.
To answer your question, yes, I believe you must vote on 20% of the shots in a given challenge.
I don't think that's a lot to ask, personally. I have voted on every single photo for every single challenge (with the exception of one that I accidentally missed) since I joined over a year ago. |

I am afraid he is not the only one.
Actually maybe I am totally missing it too.
Could you please explain/remember it to me?

Personally, I would like to be able to vote on every photo but just do not have the time. Plus, there are so many related members here that might just vote on each other's shots only and not vote for others. I'm perfectly content with the required 20 percent and most times I vote for a higher percentage. I must admit that I only leave comments on my favorite photos, mostly because I am new at this and do not feel qualified to actually critique the photography methods/results. I do take the time to look at every photo. |

I'm a little confused by THIS response...If you have time to look at every photo, why can't you make the extra effort to vote???

I can sort of relate, though I might not have put it in those terms. The first night of voting I'll sometimes just browse through the photos, not voting, just sort of getting a feeling for what kind of shots there are, how people interpreted the challenge, etc. I don't really look with a critical eye, just flipping through to see what catches my eye or stands out. I usually don't go through all of them this way, unless it's a really small field, and it's not regular that I do it at all. But at that point I'm only looking a few seconds at each photo, so it can go quickly, not nearly as long as when I'm voting and spending more time on each photo, and especially not as long as when I'm commenting.

There are times when I don't feel like voting on a specific item - mainly due to having a personal issue with the content or how it was handled. I'd like to skip them as to not let my personal feelings affect their score - but they keep popping up :(
I'd really like for a "Skip This Photo" or a "N/A" option for the purpose of being able to skip a photo and not have it show back up. |

I think they should raise the 20% vote required for your votes to count to 50% required. Why even vote if you aren't going to give everyone in the challenge a vote. Seems lazy to me. If you don't have the time (or enthusiasm/desire) to vote for all or most of them, just don't vote at all.
Plus you wouldn't be able to make an accurate vote by looking at just the thumbnail. I've seen great looking thumbnails and then disappointed by the full size picture, and vise-versa.
added text: Not everyone has the time to vote on every single challenge all the time... What I do is look at the thumbs first, and then decide if I want to vote or not. If the topic is boring to me or there appears to be 250, mostly bad/boring pics, I just don't vote on that challenge. But if I do decide to vote, I'll vote on all of them. If you're gonna decide to vote, why do it half-a$$? :)

scw1217 I think it is sad you mention this when you have only participated in a few challenges here at DPC.
I have been doing this for a long time and NEVER complained about the amount of photos to vote on or the lack of interest in the image.
I used to vote on EVERY photo in every challenge i submitted a photo to. These days I dont have that much time but I make sure I at least meet the sites 20% rule for the number of photos you must vote on for your vote to count. I would actually prefer a 25% minium to up the votes each image gets.

It's those photos you think you're "wasting your time" with that need your time the most. |

You dont have to vote on all the photos in one sitting. Vote, if something comes up, finish the next day.....or the next. Its not like it has to be done in one sitting. |

After the 10 there are two >>'s (two I think anyways). If click that it goes to the next photo. You don't have to vote on every photo.

I would like the "skip" or "N/A" option as well. I use the >> when I hit the photos I'm not comfortable with, but you must remember, that just takes you off of it now. It keeps coming back. At random. In the middle of other photos you haven't done. I don't hit very many of these that I can't vote on because I can't separate my reaction from it. And most of those are not anything that bugs me to have to skip again and again, but it does get tedious, and if the photo makes me uncomfortable, I really wish I could say "look, I do not want to vote on it, stop showing it to me" once instead of having it come back at times if I skip it the way that is available now. |

Not sure this is the best thread for this but...
Question for the folks that have been around a while....How do the results that you see during a challenge get tabulated??? If I only vote on say 18% of the images during the voting period does my vote get tabulated imediately on each image??? Then if I don't vote on enough does my vote go away at the last second???
The reason I'm askin is this... My oops shot Damn Pothole! was at 5.9 at 11pm on the last day of voting. It ended up at almost 6.2. Did a S**TLOAD of people give me a 8, 9, 10 in the last hour? Or did a bunch of low votes get thrown out because they didn't hit the 20% mark???
Just curious

I was thinking they were thrown out. Seems like all my entries actually went up quite a bit from 11p.m. to 12a.m. and about -20 votes or so. |

i think it makes sense to have to vote on a certain percentage of photos. else everyone will have their friends, family, coworkers, etc registering to give them 10s. i mean i've shared photos i planned to enter with friends and told them about how the site is a contest and they all want to come and support me. i warn them about the % thing and they decide not to register (most aren't so big on the internet or photography). in so saying, having to vote on more than 1 photo deters those kind of biased votes(though i could use some!! haha).

if im gonna vote on a challenge, i will vote on every picture that has been entered, if people have voted for me then they deserve my respect, you have voted. if its personal and upsets me i forget it and give it a mark according to its relevance and its clarity, i dont know how you can say some picture arnt worth your time, you havent really entered many and your no way professional so it would be best if you kept hush |

I can't help but feel that you're playing devil's advocate here
Okay, I'll admit I was a bit. I feel that when there are that many choices, its unreasonable to expect everybody to vote on each one.
That just doesn't strike me as being a healthy attitude for this site, even though you have been (primarily) lurking here for quite a long timeBig deal if I lurk. I'm sure I am not the only one.
You've totally missed the point of DPC.
So, tell me what the point is.
scw1217 I think it is sad you mention this when you have only participated in a few challenges here at DPC.
This is because frequently a lot of them are not the type of photograph that I would take. Other times I do not have a photograph that I consider good enough to enter. I do not need to enter a photo I am not happy with just to get opinions on it. After all, I am the one who needs to be pleased with it the most.
It keeps coming back.
Ah, you've hit the nail on the head. This actually was my point. I should be allowed to skip photos I don't wish to vote on (otherwise what is the purpose of the >>) and not have to view that photo over and over again. |

And neither are you. Again, the devil's advocate thing. I do not really feel as strongly as I put it. And then reading it comes across differently from how it was meant. You have to admit that sometimes some of the entries are questionable.
Which brings me to another thought. Some photos do not seem to fit into some catagories. They may be a great photo, clear and sharp, well composed. But the only thing that makes them fit is somebody's creative title. I will see them get high scores just based on photographic ability. But doesn't this null the point of having a subject? |
