So I get home last night, my 14-year-old son pauses the TiVo and says "Guess what? I won first place in photography."
It took me a minute to recall that all students are required to enter a fine-arts competition in one of several categories: Literature, Visual Arts, Musical Composition, Video Production, Dance Choreography, and Photography. He wanted to use some shots he took in North Carolina a year or so ago using my old FZ-20 as I was trying to teach him about light, exposure, etc. So he went through his nature shots and picked a few
I was not allowed to help him at all. I couldn't bring them into Photoshop and edit them and he didn't think about it until the last minute so there was no time to teach him how to clean them and crop them. So we quickly sent his picked pics over to Wal-Mart and got some black poster board. He mounted them and took them to school the next day, did his presentation and they were sent to be judged.
So yesterday a note gets delivered to him that he's the 9th Grade First Place Winner (presumably at the school level). This Saturday we go to the Exhibition of all the finalists and the overall winners will be announced.
Ironically one of his he picked but liked the least was liked the best by his classmates (and myself).
Will update on Saturday, but needless to say... I'm pretty darn proud.
Thanks for reading...

Here is the info for last year's national winners. This is a "filter-up" PTA sponsored event.

Good for BOTH of you, Kevin!
My oldest daughter came home yesterday & said that she chose 'photography' as an extra activity for a 4-H project... it IS a good feeling to see our children share our interest, isn't it?
Congratulations, and best of luck.

Very cool. My kids rolls her eyes at the idea of photography, it's just not an interest for her. She thinks the camera in her phone is a precision device. I may be sparking my nephews (plural) interest though.
Are we going to get a chance to see your son's winning entry? |

Not sure which five of these he selected now... I printed all eight for him to choose from the prints.
