This is definitely a tough sell. But consider that most people who experience this tragedy think just like you.
They're good parents. They're smart people. No one is ever going to mistake them for dumb or irresponsible. But while driving the kid fell asleep and was quiet, and since they're in the backseat where you can't necessarily see them so easily, out of sight can mean out of mind, especially when your mind is on other things, like your itinerary for the day, whether or not you have time to run through the drive through at Starbucks, did you leave the TV on, what should you do for dinner tonight, gosh you're nervous about that presentation you have to make this afternoon, and then your cell phone rings and your husband is wondering if you can pick up the dry cleaning...
The idea is that even good parents make mistakes - why risk making this one when it is preventable? Part of the billing is that it's like a smoke detector or car insurance. You're not in the habit of setting things on fire and you're a good driver who hasn't had an accident in over ten years, but you wouldn't dream of living without it because it provides a little extra peace of mind. In a perfect world, there is no "what if". Unfortunately, we don't live there.

You asked for feedback, and while I agree that accidents do happen, I still stand by my original response, I think that most people would think that they didn't need, either because they are responsible enough that it is a waste of money, or they are irresponsible and don't think it is something worthwhile. It would just be hard to market and actually make money on. Especially since there are other devices as mentioned above that already exist and I bet most people here haven't heard of any of them, this makes me think your idea will have a similar problem. I am not saying it is a bad idea, I just don't think it will sell well.
As far as comparing this to car insurance, or fire insurance, I think it is totally different. I don't have fire insurance because I am worried I will accidentally set my house on fire, I have it because there are things that I can't control, somebody else setting my house on fire, the electrical wires running through the house. I don't have car insurance because I am worried I will run into a telephone poll, but rather because I am worried about all the other factors I can't control like other drivers on the road. And I put plug protectors in the wall so that my kids won't get into the socket while I can't watch their every move 100% of the time. With this device I personally wouldn't buy it because it is something that stops me from doing something wrong that in my mind I have total control over. Yes, I realize accidents do happen, but I wouldn't be thinking about that when I saw the product in the store.
Sorry, I may just be rambling, but I think you will have a tough time marketing this and making money from it. Even with all the arguments people have put forth, I still wouldn't buy it. Maybe I am stubborn, but I don't think I will ever leave my kids in the car by themselves, maybe it will happen and I will change my opinion, but that is how it stands for me.
