I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this...
With the £ so strong against the $ at the moment, and having been looking at buying an Xbox 360 for a while, now seems like a good time to buy an import from America. I was just wondering though, since Europe uses PAL and America uses NTSC, would an imported console work on my TV? And would games from here work on it?
My guess it probably not, but it would be good to know if anyone knows for sure.
Also, if you know any good cheap places to buy in the UK that would be great too. Rock Band is coming out soon and I need to play it! I have a PS2 but the game loses value when you can't play online.

Nope, different voltages as well IIRC.

I have plug adaptors from various holidays, would they solve that problem?

From the FAQ:
34. I live in the U.K and I̢۪m planning to order my Xbox 360 from the U.S, as it is much cheaper than here in the U.K. I wanted to know if it would be compatible here in the U.K.
Just like current generation consoles, a console designed for North America (NTSC) won̢۪t work on Europe (PAL) for the simple reason that games are region locked. So if you get an US Xbox 360, you̢۪ll have to purchase NTSC games because those titles sold in Europe won̢۪t work on your North American Xbox 360.

If the console is dual voltage then a plug adapter will work. If not dual voltage then you need a converter as well and not just the travel version. You need one that can be used on an ongoing basis. The travel ones are for short periods of time only.

American DVDs aren't suppoed to work on European DVD players, but actually all that stops you playing them is that the manufacturers have locked them out - the code to unlock DVD players is readily available on the internet - might the same apply to games? |

Actually, there's no code to unlock DVD players. The players have to be physically modified. You can purchase such players, but unless you're DVD technician, it's doubtful you can do it yourself. Same goes for XBox. |

You can buy the xbox, a transformer and get it chipped to make it region free. A friend of mine had the mods done for around £70.
Plays anything, even downloaded and burned games. |

I'd imagine that would get banned very quickly from Xbox Live though, which is one of the main reasons I wanted one :P
Thanks for the help everyone, looks like I'll have to buy from UK at the normal high prices... unless European imports would work if I can find it cheaper in France or something?

I've no idea how they could tell the machine had been chipped or not. I'm fairly sure hes on Xbox live quite frequently. The only thing it hinders is the warranty, which it entirely voids. Oh, and it's illegal. Other than that, he's had no problems with it and it's been as reliable (which isn't saying much) as any other Xbox. |

It is possible if you were to convert the power cord over to your standard. you would also have to get a mod chip to break the code so you can play non us titles on the us system, mod chips run from $20-$120USD. i believe, you would have to install it yourself, including soderin* to replace the current chip thats in it, there are how-to's on the internet you just have to find them, some people send theres into a company and they do it for you. it is possible if you got all the conversions but it would cost a little more. |

I havent seen any really cheap as such, but being Xmas time there are plenty of good value bundles out there. I noticed woolworths has a good one with 4 good games, it wasnt the elite though. |

Sounds like modding would end up more expensive and more complicated anyway, hehe :) Yeh I have found some good bundles around. I don't really need the Elite, I don't have HDTV anyway, but I'd like the one with the hard drive since Rock Band will have DLC. So that rules out Core and Arcade I think.
I'm only guessing I'd need a hard drive one though... can anyone with a 360 already confirm how DLC works?
